The end of the gods (original title: L'Inchiesta ) is a 2006 remake of the original film of the same name by Damiano Damiani from 1986 (German: The investigation ). It is based on a script written in 1986 by Suso Cecchi D'Amico and Ennio Flaiano .

action

On a Friday afternoon in the year 33 CE, the earth shakes and a great darkness spreads. This natural phenomenon can be seen throughout the Roman Empire - also on the island of Capri , the seat of government of the Roman Emperor Tiberius, and in Germania , where the Roman legionnaire Titus Valerius Taurus defeated a barbarian tribe at that very moment. A few weeks later, he, a loyal ally of the emperor, received an order from the emperor: Taurus was supposed to travel to Jerusalem to investigate whether the rumors were true that a prophet named Jesus of Nazareth was said to have died on the cross on the day of the earthquake , would have risen from the dead. If this rumor turns out to be true, Jesus would be a deity and Tiberius would have to fear for his title as “God on earth”.

Taurus sails to Palestine with his slave Brixos . In Jerusalem, Taurus meets the young Tabitha and falls in love with her. Little does he know that she is a Christian . She is the daughter of the Pharisee Natan, who in turn has the followers of Jesus relentlessly persecuted.

In Jerusalem, Taurus encounters numerous obstacles. He states that both Pontius Pilate, the governor of Rome, and the high priests are trying with all their might to dismiss the alleged resurrection of Jesus as a hoax and to blame it on the Christians. Neither of them can completely prove that Jesus was not resurrected. Over time, Taurus also doubts himself and his mission. His skepticism increases when he sees Jesus' followers being persecuted and Stephen being stoned for his beliefs. Taurus begins to sympathize with the faith of Christians and his beloved Tabitha. Only after Tabitha was beaten to death by her father Natan, who cannot tolerate a blasphemy, and Simon Petrus, the leader of the Christians, has raised her from death, does Taurus confess to the Christian faith.

Taurus writes a letter to Tiberius and lets him know, still on his deathbed, that he has found neither proof of the legend of the resurrection nor one against it, and that he can say that Christians are peace-loving people who only wanted to practice their faith. Shortly before Emperor Tiberius wants to declare Christianity the Roman state religion, he is murdered by Caligula because the young patrician sees his own claim to divinity in danger. Caligula finally orders the persecution of Christians in the Roman Empire.

About the German title

In German-speaking countries the film was released on DVD under two titles. Originally it was called The End of the Gods , in 2009 it was republished under the title Corpus Dei - The Bloody Way of God .

The original German title is ambiguous. Superficially it refers to the end of the polytheistic Roman religion , from which the protagonist converts to Christianity , which Tiberius also wants to recognize as the state religion.

Reviews

"Elaborately staged television monumental film with good actors, which refers to Damiano Damiani's" The Investigation "1986. The religious-historical background and the historical robes and backdrops are only used to tell an actually modern detective story. "
