The Planetary Society
The Planetary Society is a not-for-profit, non-governmental organization that aims to support and advance the exploration of the solar system and the search for extraterrestrial life .
The organization was founded in 1980 by Carl Sagan , Bruce Murray and Louis Friedman and has more than 50,000 members in over 100 countries. It is based in Pasadena , California. Science journalist Bill Nye has been chairman since 2010 .
Through its membership fees it finances research into new technologies, such as B. the use of solar sails as space propulsion with the Cosmos 1 probe , and conducts public relations and lobbying to support space travel activities .
Membership enables free entry to the German Museum in Munich.
