Joe Versus the Volcano (Original Title: Joe Versus the Volcano ) is an American comedy film from 1990. The director was John Patrick Shanley , who also wrote the screenplay . The main roles were played by Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan .

Joe Banks works for a medical device manufacturer. When he learns that he is terminally ill, he quits the job. The appointment with the colleague DeDe turns into a fiasco.
Millionaire Samuel Harvey Graynamore suggests that Banks jump into a volcano as a human sacrifice on the Pacific island of Waponi Wu so that the local population can agree to a raw materials contract. Banks flies from New York to Los Angeles . There he meets the millionaire's daughters, Angelica and Patricia Graynamore; Patricia accompanies him on his further journey. The two get married and plunge into the volcano. At that moment the volcano erupts and throws Patricia and Joe safely into the Pacific . Joe learns that his doctor was bribed by Samuel Graynamore to misdiagnose.
Reviews
Hans-Ulrich Pönack described the film in tip magazine as poor romance and terribly boring . Another reviewer said the comedy was fascinatingly stupid . Meg Ryan's portrayal was highly praised in cinema magazine .
The lexicon of international films said: "A modern romantic fairy tale, whose flimsy story, however, is too idle to be able to entertain carefree."
