Thomas Springstein (born April 7, 1958 in Leipzig ) is a German athletics trainer .

Life

He graduated from the DHfK and became a trainer at SC Neubrandenburg in 1984 . He became known as the trainer of the sprint world champion Katrin Krabbe and the 400 m European champion Grit Breuer and through his involvement in the doping affair between the two athletes. Both runners were convicted of taking Clenbuterol in 1992 and banned for many years due to drug abuse. Springstein evaded sports jurisdiction at the time by leaving his club SC Neubrandenburg. Later he was a coach at Schweriner SC , LT 85 Hanover and SC Magdeburg .

After her three-year ban, Grit Breuer returned to competitive sport and was trained by Springstein, who was now privately linked with Breuer. Because of her success, Springstein received a fee contract from the German Athletics Association despite internal resistance . In Magdeburg, Springstein's training group included Ulrike Urbansky , Nils Schumann , Ivonne Teichmann , Stephan Vuckovic and Anja Dittmer . In 2002 Springstein was voted Germany's athletics coach of the year.

Due to the violation of the Drugs Act and the passing on of doping substances to minors in a particularly serious case, Springstein was sentenced in 2006 by the Magdeburg District Court to a 16-month suspended prison sentence. At this trial, Anne-Kathrin Elbe testified against him. During the trial, emails came to light inquiring about the gene doping drug Repoxygen . Then he became a personal trainer . In 2008 he trained young Lithuanian sprinters in South Africa.
