Peter Gordon (born June 20, 1951 in New York City ) is an American composer and musician ( guitar , saxophone , keyboards ).

life and work

Gordon spent his childhood in Virginia . He started playing the piano at the age of seven and the clarinet at the age of nine . At the age of 13, Gordon moved with his family to Munich, where his father worked as a radio journalist for Voice of America . Gordon took lessons from Don Menza and Peter Jona Korn . Gordon studied composition at the University of San Diego with Kenneth Gaburo and Roger Reynolds . At Mills College he studied with Robert Ashley and Terry Riley and received his Masters . Captain Beefheart and the poetry of David Antin and Kathy Acker (whom he married in 1976) inspired him. In 1975 Gorden moved to New York City. In November 1976, works by Blue Gene Tyranny and himself were presented by an all-star ensemble in a concert series at the University of Berkeley under the motto Trust In Rock (released on a double CD in 2019). He founded the Love of Life Orchestra (LOLO) in 1977 .

Gordon worked with video artist Kit Fitzgerald and with Lawrence Weiner .

Gordon has composed numerous film scores , including for the film Joe versus the Volcano . He has recorded with Robert Ashley, David Van Tieghem , Arthur Russell , Laurie Anderson , Rhys Chatham , Suzanne Vega , The Flying Lizards and David Johansen .
