from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Charles Arthur Russell Jr. (born May 21, 1951 in Oskaloosa , Iowa , † April 4, 1992 in New York ) was an American cellist , singer , avant-garde musician , composer and record producer .

life and work

In his musical work he combined avant-garde , dance music, electronic music and pop . The extremely adventurous Russell, among other things, amplified his cello with guitar amplifiers and combined serial music with rock harmonies. He has worked with artists as diverse as beat poet Allen Ginsberg , avant-garde musician Philip Glass , pop musician David Byrne and DJ Nicky Siano. In the late 1970s and early 1980s he became known for a few underground disco hits, but during his lifetime he was only known in New York music circles. It was not until the early 2000s that his work became known to a wider public when two record labels published anthologies of his work. World of Echo was inducted into The Wire's “100 Records That Set The World On Fire (While No One Was Listening)” .

Russell was inducted into the Kailas Shugendō branch of the Arya Maitreya Mandala on February 14, 1969 with the initiation name Jigme . His teacher was Neville G. Pemchekov Warwick , a student of Lama Anagarika Govinda , who directed the Kailas Shugendō .

Arthur Russell, a homosexual, died on April 4, 1992 as a result of an HIV infection.
