The fourth protocol is a thriller with Pierce Brosnan and Michael Caine from 1987. The title is based on a fictional secret additional protocol to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty of 1968, with which the nuclear powers undertake to target nuclear weapons exclusively by conventional military means such as aircraft or missiles to bring instead of by freight.

The script for the film is based on the novel " The Fourth Protocol " by Frederick Forsyth , which he published in 1984. The thriller was adapted by Forsyth, Richard Burridge and George Axelrod . For Axelrod, who previously with 7. Year Itch , Breakfast at Tiffany's and The Manchurian Candidate was able to celebrate great successes, this was one of his last works as a screenwriter.
