The Killer Inside Me is a noir thriller from 2010 directed by Michael Winterbottom . The film is based on the book of the same name by the author Jim Thompson from 1952. The main roles include Casey Affleck , Kate Hudson , Jessica Alba and Bill Pullman . The film was shown in competition at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2010 .

Background and plot

As in the novel, the film is told from the perspective of the main character. Lou Ford initially describes himself as a man with a simple mind and clear basic principles: A man in Central City should address everyone who wears a skirt as ma'am.

Ford is the deputy sheriff in a small Texas town in the mid-1950s and, on the outside, the nice guy next door who nobody thinks anything bad about. First, Lou falls in love with the prostitute Joyce and they both have a sadomasochistic relationship. In order to venture a new beginning in another city, they decide to blackmail the wealthy magnate Conway and to ease the necessary money. Ford, however, has its own plans and wants to get revenge on Conway, as he is believed to be responsible for the death of Ford's brother. On the night the money was handed over, Ford allegedly beats Joyce to death and shoots Elmer, Conway's son, so that it looks like an argument among lovers at the scene.

The young cop is a psychopathic woman killer. The background for these inclinations seems to lie in his childhood, which is indicated by brief flashbacks to the past. A friend of his father's performed sadistic sexual acts on him and he abused a five-year-old girl as a teenager.

As the deaths in the small town pile up, the investigators and the prosecutor tighten the net around Ford. In addition, Ford is blackmailed by a homeless man who chased him on the night of the murders. To get rid of the man, Ford also kills Amy and blames the homeless man who is shot while trying to escape. Ford is eventually arrested, but does not know what the investigators have in their hands against him. With the help of a lawyer, however, he will soon be free again.

Back at his house, the prosecutor and sheriff confront Ford with the living Joyce. Before anyone can intervene, Lou stabs Joyce with a knife. The sheriff's shots then ignite the gasoline that Lou previously distributed throughout the house. The film ends with a shot of the house exploding.

Reviews

The film received mostly negative reviews due to the very realistically depicted scenes of violence.

  • Joachim Kurz from kino-zeit.de closes his criticism with "In Sundance the brutality of the pictures was enough, in Berlin, however, the storm of indignation had already subsided - the disappointment remained."
  • Moviepilot reports: “When Michael Winterbottom wanted to answer questions from the audience after the screening, a woman called in his direction“ Disgusting! ”And then left the hall. Many other viewers were shocked and disgusted by the violence that was explicitly and realistically portrayed in the film. "
  • Jan Schulz-Ojala rated the contribution to the Berlinale as “Pulp. So trash. Rapid trash. "
  • Todd McCarthy wrote in Variety : “The film is a conscientious, but only partially satisfactory, adaptation of the novel. [...] The film lacks the striking, dynamic - and it suffers from its really shabby atmosphere. "
