action
Jude Fawley lives in Victorian England . He dreams of a university degree, but becomes a craftsman because the University of Christminster does not accept him. Jude marries a country woman, Arabella, after she claims she is expecting a child.
A few months later, Arabella left him and traveled to Australia. Jude moves to Christminster after all and works there as a stonemason when he meets his cousin Sue Bridehead. Soon Jude and Sue become close friends. After Sue stayed at Jude's one time, a relationship between the two is suspected. Sue threatens to lose her training place in the teachers' college.
Sue marries the teacher Phillotson, in whose school she worked for a long time. She later leaves him to live with Jude. Jude and Sue have two children. Society regards this extramarital relationship as scandalous.
It turns out that Arabella gave birth to a child a few months after leaving Australia. Since her family is no longer ready to support the son, he is sent to England and raised by Jude and Sue. One day he kills his half-siblings and himself. Sue loses her previously liberal attitude and becomes very religious. She sees the death of her children as a punishment from God for their wrongful conduct and returns to her husband Phillotson.
