A Mighty Heart ( A Mighty Heart ) is a US-American - British film drama of Michael Winterbottom from the year 2007 . John Orloff wrote the script based on the 2003 book A Courageous Heart: The Life and Death of Journalist Daniel Pearl, directed by Mariane Pearl.

action

The film tells of the kidnapping and murder of the US-Israeli journalist Daniel Pearl in January 2002 . At that time he lived in Islamabad with his wife of French descent, the radio journalist Mariane Pearl, and did research. They are a happy couple and look forward to the imminent birth of their child. On the way to an interview with an al-Qaida member, he is kidnapped in Karachi by supporters of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed . The missing Daniel Pearl is of Jewish faith, which could be dangerous for him (the viewer only gets to see Daniel Pearl in flashbacks from now on).

Two days later, the kidnappers emailed them to say they would murder Daniel Pearl if the United States does not release some of their compatriots. They immediately demand better conditions for the prisoners in the Guantánamo penal camp . The investigation team, including a representative from the Diplomatic Security Service , puzzles over Pearl's condition and speculates about details of the recordings sent. They are in contact with the kidnappers via email. Mariane Pearl tries to research on her own .

The Pakistani authorities are trying to save Daniel Pearl's life, also due to diplomatic pressure and global interest. The complicated investigations and operations are described precisely and in detail. The police work is successful, the first suspects come into police custody and are interrogated. Particularly noticeable these days is the hysteria and decency of the international mass media , sensational journalism and television . False reports, such as an unresearched one of Pearl's alleged demise, are often circulated. Pearl was actually beheaded a week later and the execution of the perpetrators was taped. A few weeks later, Mariane gives birth to her child healthy and, although she becomes a celebrity at times in all her grief , she remains a journalist and returns to her home country France. She writes down her experiences under the title A brave heart: Life and death of the journalist Daniel Pearl .

Reviews

Lisa Schwarzbaum wrote in Entertainment Weekly on June 13, 2007 that the narrative perspective, which “presses” the abductee's wife into focus, is a huge challenge for the film authors. Angelina Jolie stands in the way of a "great film" despite her good intentions.

Kenneth Turan wrote in the Los Angeles Times on June 22, 2007 that the film lived from the "dark story", from the "star qualities" of Angelina Jolie and from the director's paradocumentary style. The film will be seen as a "political film noir " that offers tension and shows the police investigation in the Pearl case extensively. The play of the professional and amateur actors, as well as the improvisation within the fixed script structure, would convey the feeling that the viewer is at the scene of the action. Jolie resist the temptation to exaggerate with her portrayal and show Mariane Pearl as a real person with weaknesses such as impatience.

The portrayal of Angelina Jolie was largely praised, although as a white she had to play a black. Mariane Pearl herself had expressly spoken out in favor of Jolie's work.

Verena Lueken presented concerns of a completely different kind in the FAZ on May 22, 2007: “But the question arises what it means when more and more feature films , shot with the claim of the highest possible authenticity, take on the role of historical a few years after the events Accept certificate ".

The lexicon of international films judges: “Michael Winterbottom successfully tries to get a semi-documentary perspective, which of course is always blocked by the fixation on the star of the film, Angelina Jolie. The attempt to bring Hollywood drama and critical political cinema under one roof is quite remarkable, if not entirely successful. "
