William Motzing

William Motzing also Bill Motzing (born August 19, 1937 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania as William Edward Motzing Jr. , † January 30, 2014 in Manhasset , New York ) was an American composer , conductor and arranger in film and television. He created some musical works for Australian cinema in the 1970s and 1980s. Including compositions for films such as News War , I Fight for My Child , The Last Night or Einstein Junior .

life and career

William Motzing, born in 1937 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, first attended the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York , where he received his bachelor's degree , and later he received his master's degree from the Manhattan School of Music in 1960. In the 1960s, Motzing played the trombone as a musician in various orchestras such as the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and the Radio City Music Hall Orchestra. He also worked with numerous jazz ensembles. He wrote over 30 Australian film and television soundtracks.

From 1968 to 1971 he went on a world tour with the band Blood, Sweat & Tears and worked as their sound designer. After visiting Australia while touring with the band in 1972, William Motzing moved to Sydney to take up a position at the New South Wales Conservatorium of Music , later renamed the Sydney Conservatorium of Music . Motzing worked there for around four decades as a lecturer at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music . There he taught various subjects, including music theory, arrangement, modern jazz history, improvisation and ensemble. At the beginning of the 1990s he also lived in Germany for a while , where he recorded numerous scores as an orchestrator and conductor for various music labels. In 1995 he returned to Australia. In 2012, Motzing resigned from his position at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and eventually returned to the United States.

From 1978 onwards, William Motzing also composed the music for film and television scores himself. Motzing wrote the music for films such as Phillip Noyce's drama News War with Wendy Hughes , for Donald Crombie's theatrical production I Fight for My Child , for the fantasy musical Return of Captain Invincible, or Who is Afraid of America? by Philippe Mora , for John Duigan's cinema production The Last Night , for Dušan Makavejev's comedy Coca Cola Kid , for Yahoo Serious ' comedy Einstein Junior or for Phillip Noyce's love drama Shadow of a Peacock . In addition, during his career he orchestrated and conducted the music for numerous other cinema productions, TV films and TV series and, as an arranger, also oversaw songs by well-known music groups such as the Australian rock group INXS or the British pop band Smokie .

William Motzing received five nominations for the AFI Award in his career between 1978 and 1987 , and once he won the coveted Australian trophy. Motzing died on January 30, 2014 at the age of 76 in Manhasset, New York State.
