action

The previously known world history around science is (fictionally) questioned and completely turned on its head in this film. Albert Einstein is not a German researcher, but a Tasmanian and son of a local apple farmer. In his youth he begins to be interested in natural science, draws up formulas and hypotheses and tries to prove them by means of experiments, which usually end in chaos. When he succeeds in his research in splitting the beer atom and thus bringing foam into the drink, his parents are convinced that Albert is a genius and should make his fortune in the big wide world. As a result, Einstein leaves Tasmania in a boat.

After an odyssey through Australia , during which he met the French physicist Marie Curie and the sleazy patent office manager Preston Preston , he finally ended up in Sydney in 1906 , where he wanted to have his split formula patented. But since the formula does not come with a material invention, he is put outside the door with mockery. Einstein doesn't let himself get down, rents a boarding house, improves atomic fission, develops the theory of relativity further and invents surfing and the concept of rock 'n' roll . At the same time, Marie, who has fallen in love with Albert, stands up for him and encourages Preston to accept the formula after all and also to find Einstein a job in his patent office. Secretly, however, Preston steals the Bieratom formula and passes it on to two German brewers in order to make money. When Albert hears about it, he confronts the three, but ends up in an asylum.

Other misunderstood geniuses like Ernest Rutherford or the chemist Brian Asprin cavort here . Marie, angry at Preston's behavior, tries to free Albert. But this has meanwhile given up, so that Marie leaves him. Einstein then grabs the ambition and with the help of his electric guitar he can finally break out. When he wants to go back to Marie, she has already left for her home country.

Albert sets off for France and finally convinces Marie to accompany him to Paris . Here in the Academy of Science the Nobel Prize is to be awarded to Preston and his stolen beer atom formula in the evening . Preston wants to present a machine for atomic fission - an atom bomb . Albert and Marie arrive at the event at the last minute, but can't stop Preston from turning on the machine. Albert finally manages to neutralize the device with his electric guitar and the energy-absorbing rock 'n' roll.

Einstein finally receives the Nobel Prize for his performance and his formula and returns with Marie at his side as a folk hero to Tasmania, where he celebrates his success with the first rock concert in history.

criticism

“With all disrespect, a loving homage to Albert Einstein as an inventor, human and animal lover. By resorting to a multitude of cinematic narrative forms, the unity of the film is torpedoed in order to offer something to almost every viewer. Largely amusing entertainment for friends of exuberant nonsense. "

The German Film and Media Assessment FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the rating particularly valuable.

Others

  • " Einstein Junior " was one of the biggest box office hits in Australian cinemas at the time. It was realized in large parts around Sydney. The scene in which Serious carves a surfboard in the Australian bush, for example, was made in a park in the megacity.
  • In one scene Albert Einstein tries to take off a shoe and falls stumbling backwards through a closed window and then into the depths. While filming the scene, Yahoo Serious said he hit his head so badly that he almost broke his neck.
  • In addition to the free use of the names and careers of Albert Einstein and Marie Curie, the film features a number of other well-known personalities in science, including Ernest Rutherford, Charles Darwin , Sigmund Freud , the Wright and Lumiere brothers , Guglielmo Marconi and Thomas Edison .
  • Some of Australia's most famous musicians contributed to the soundtrack, e. B. the bands Icehouse and Mental as Anything , the latter recording the Chuck Berry hit " Rock and Roll Music " again. In addition, the theme from The Good, the Bad and the Ugly by Ennio Morricone , Richard Strauss ' “ Also sprach Zarathustra ”, themes from the 5th Symphony by Ludwig van Beethoven , the Overture 1812 by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and the Overture to Wilhelm Tell heard from Rossini in the film.
  • David Roach, the film's co-writer, producer and editor, made a guest appearance as one of the Tasmanian farmers at the concert at the end of the film.
