Icehouse is an Australian rock band.
Band history
Icehouse was founded in 1980 by Iva Davies and Keith Welsh. From 1977 to 1980 the band toured Australian clubs under the name "Flowers". When she released her first album Icehouse in 1980 and then toured the USA in 1981, she changed the name to "Icehouse".
Iva Davies is the driving force behind Icehouse and the only member of the original line-up that remains in the band today. Although many of their albums sold well, the group never made an effort to develop a commercial style. Often changing band line-up and the associated influences helped the band to keep developing.
In the early to mid-1980s, Davies' soft and calm voice and the carried sound hit the nerve of the time. Both vocally and tonally, it could easily be confused with Roxy Music . With singles like Hey Little Girl and Street Café they stormed the charts worldwide in 1983. Although there were seldom such single successes after that, Davies continues to work with changing line-ups and releases albums.
At the turn of the millennium , almost 2.5 billion people watched the New Year's Eve fireworks broadcast live in Sydney . The performance was accompanied by a 25-minute version of Great Southern Land , which Davies called The Ghost of Time . The recording was made by the Sydney Symphonic Orchestra.
In 2006 the band was honored with the induction into the ARIA Hall of Fame .
