Edward Thaddeus Lawton

Edward Thaddeus Lawton OP (born October 12, 1913 in South Boston , † December 19, 1966 in Sokoto, Nigeria ) was an American clergyman of the Roman Catholic Church , Apostolic Prefect and Bishop of Sokoto .

Life

Lawton attended St. Francis de Sales School and Boston College High . He attended college at Boston College . Lawton made his profession of the Dominican Order on August 16, 1937 and was ordained a priest on June 6, 1943. First he came as a teacher at Fenwick High School in Oak Park , Illinois , where he taught until 1951.

In 1951 he became a mission to Lagos in Nigeria sent. He arrived there on February 27, 1951, the first of three missionaries. On January 15, 1954 he was appointed Apostolic Prefect of the newly established Apostolic Prefecture Sokoto and installed on November 13, 1954. In 1964, Sokoto was made a diocese and Lawton was appointed first bishop on June 16, 1964. He was ordained bishop on August 15, 1964 by Archbishop of Kaduna John MacCarthy . He died on December 19, 1966 at the age of 53. He was buried in Gusau near the Our Lady of Fatima Church .

Since the Apostolic Prefecture and later Diocese of Sokoto was only just being established, Lawton had several difficulties at the beginning, including a lack of staff to look after the faithful.

Simple life

Lawton is said that despite his episcopal dignity, he always sought the simple life and also shaped his day like a simple monk.
