Dušan Makavejev ( Serbian - Cyrillic Душан Макавејев ; born October 13, 1932 in Belgrade ; † January 25, 2019 there ) was a Yugoslav or Serbian film director .

Life

Makavejev studied psychology and first made documentaries, from 1965 feature films that could be assigned to the Novi film . He received a Silver Bear at the 1968 Berlinale for his film Innocence Without Protection . After this success, festival director Alfred Bauer invited him to the 1970 Berlinale as a jury member. At this Berlinale he caused a stir when, after the premiere of the film ok by Michael Verhoeven and the resignation of jury president George Stevens, he appeared in front of the press and spoke of censorship. The jury resigned completely a little later and there were no winners at this Berlinale.

Makavejev's 1971 film WR - Mysteries of the Organism based on the theories of Wilhelm Reich was initially banned in Yugoslavia , but allowed again in the 1980s. Makavejev immigrated to the United States in the early 1970s and taught at Harvard University .

Self-description

Commenting on his way of making films, Makavejev said that “a guerrilla can use any weapon at his disposal: cobblestones, bullets, slogans, music. It's the same with film. We can use whatever falls into our hands: fiction, documentaries, cultural films, advertising. It doesn't matter the style. You have to take advantage of the element of surprise. "
