Gary Lockwood began his career as a stuntman and light double for Anthony Perkins before he made his first appearance in an extra role as a gang member in the western The Man with the Golden Guns (Original: Warlock ) in 1959. In it he played a research fellow for the main characters, two writers for an adventure magazine in Honolulu . In this role, Lockwood was rarely seen, because the series mainly revolved around the two main characters, and it was discontinued after a season. At the same time, Lockwood played his first minor film roles, for example in Elia Kazan's drama Fever in the Blood alongside Natalie Wood and Warren Beatty .
The second permanent role that Gary Lockwood received was the title role in the NBC series The Lieutenant from 1963 to 1964. He played the role of Second Lieutenant William Rice. The series about the United States Marine Corps in peacetime was produced by the later Star Trek inventor Gene Roddenberry and by the later solo for ONCEL producer Norman Felton . Lockwood's co-star was Robert Vaughn , who played Rice's line manager, Captain Rambridge. This series was also discontinued after a season. Lockwood was hired as a well-known series star for the second pilot film Where No Man Has Gone Before by Raumschiff Enterprise , where he played Lt. Commander Gary Mitchell. This pilot was then aired as the third installment in the series, Tip of the Iceberg . Lockwood is known to a broad audience primarily through the role of the astronaut Dr. Frank Poole in Stanley Kubrick's classic 2001: A Space Odyssey from 1968 Present. In the same year he had another leading film role alongside Elke Sommer in On a Friday in Las Vegas
From 1959 to the present day, Gary Lockwood has appeared in over two dozen films and has had nearly 80 guest appearances on television, including the series Smoking Colts , Cobra, Take Over , MacGyver , Hard But Heartbeat , Murder Is Her Hobby, and the series One Colt just in case .
