Heimo Bachstein

Heimo C. Bachstein (born June 7, 1937 in Trautenau , today Trutnov ( Czech Republic ); † May 13, 2011 in Marktheidenfeld ) was a German cineast , film critic and collector who also appeared as a producer , actor and director of experimental films.

Live and act

The focus of his research and collection activities included Sergej M. Eisenstein and the Soviet film of the 1930s and 1940s as well as the American avant-garde around Andy Warhol .

As a member of FIPRESCI , he was a member of many festival juries, for example at the Mannheim-Heidelberg Film Festival (1974–1987) and the 11th Stuttgart Film Winter (1998). In Christoph Schlingensief's film United Trash he took on the role of Horst Klipp.

The town of Marktheidenfeld, where Bachstein lived, awarded him their Medal of Merit in 2000 .

In 2002 he handed over part of his extensive archive, which in addition to numerous film studies publications also includes film manuscripts and projection equipment, to the Institute for Theater, Film and Media Studies at Goethe University Frankfurt am Main .

In 2010, another substantial part of the Bachstein Collection was donated to the University Library of the Bauhaus University Weimar . The inventory there includes more than 1,000 books and 150 magazine titles with over 3,500 individual issues as well as approx. 65 meters of shelves of photographs, film posters, correspondence, festival catalogs, scripts and other materials. 16 mm copies of Bachstein's films PING PONG (1972) and OH ... LYMPIA (1973) are also part of the collection.

In the summer of 2015, a seminar on the Heimo Bachstein Collection took place at the Media Faculty of the Bauhaus University. The examination of the donation resulted in an exhibition, the student work is comprehensively documented in a public weblog.
