Emi Wada

Emi Wada ( Japanese 和田 惠 美 , Wada Emi , actually: Wada Emiko ( 和田 恵 美 子 ), maiden name: Noguchi Emiko ( 野 口 恵 美 子 ); born March 18, 1937 in Kyōto , Japan ) is a Japanese costume designer who, among other things, won an Oscar for won the best costume design .

Life

Noguchi Emiko, who is married to the director Ben Wada and known under the name Emi Wada, began her career in the film industry as a costume designer for the musical adventure film Marco in 1973 and has worked on the costumes for around thirty films to this day.

After a twelve-year hiatus, in 1985 she designed the costumes for the film Ran by Akira Kurosawa with Tatsuya Nakadai , Akira Terao and Jinpachi Nezu in the lead roles and won the Oscar for best costume design at the 1986 Academy Awards . She was also nominated for the British Academy Film Award for best costumes .

In 1993 she and Julie Taymor won an Emmy for outstanding individual achievements in costume design for a television performance of Igor Fjodorowitsch Stravinsky's opera oratorio Oedipus Rex produced by PBS . In 1998, Emi Wada won a Hong Kong Film Award for best costume and makeup design for the first time for the romantic period drama Song jia huang chao (1997) by Mabel Cheung with Maggie Cheung , Michelle Yeoh and Vivian Wu in the roles of Soong Sisters Song Qingling , Song Ailing, and Song Meiling .

She received another Hong Kong Film Award for best costume and makeup design in 2003 for the action adventure Hero (Ying Xiong, 2002) by Zhang Yimou with Jet Li , Tony Leung Chiu Wai and Maggie Cheung.

In 2005 she was nominated for the Saturn Award for Best Costume for House of Flying Daggers (2004) by Yimou Zhang with Ziyi Zhang , Takeshi Kaneshiro and Andy Lau . At the same time she received a further nomination for the BAFTA Film Award for the best costumes and for the Golden Satellite Award for the best costume design.

For Wu Qingyuan (2006) by Zhuangzhuang Tian with Chen Chang , Sylvia Chang and Akira Emoto she was nominated for an Asian Film Award for best production designer for the first time in 2007 .

She received another nomination for an Asian Film Award in 2010 as best costume designer for the historical action drama Lang zai ji (2009) by Zhuangzhuang Tian with Maggie Q , Jō Odagiri and Chung Hua Tou . In addition, she was nominated for a Golden Horse Award for best makeup and costume design for this film at the Golden Horse Film Festival 2009.

Most recently Emi Wada was nominated for another Hong Kong Film Award for best costume and makeup design in 2011, for the action film Jianyu (2010) by Chao-Bin Su with Michelle Yeoh, Woo-sung Jung and Kelly Lin .
