biography

Zhang Yimou was born in Xi'an. His family was persecuted at the time of the Cultural Revolution because of their Kuomintang background, and he himself was sent to work on the land. He then worked in a textile factory in Xianyang .

In 1978 he was admitted to the Beijing Film Academy for the subject of camera because of his achievements as a hobby photographer . After graduating in 1982, he was appointed cameraman at the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Film Studio in Nanning . There he worked closely as a cameraman with Chen Kaige , whose film “ Yellow Earth ” marked the beginning of the “fifth generation” of Chinese cinema.

In 1987 he moved to Xi'an, where his directing career began with the international success " Red Cornfield ". Even in his first films, Zhang Yimou demonstrated a masterly handling of color dramaturgy , which will continue to be his trademark. In the early days in particular, his films are set in rural China and address social changes using strong female figures, with whose portrayal Gong Li became famous. Before the production of “ Shanghai Serenade ”, Zhang Yimou and Gong Li were also a couple in private.

From the mid-1990s, the content of Zhang Yimou's films changed. He is increasingly dedicated to the present and makes films with an urban background with “ Keep Cool ” and “ Happy Times ”. With the lavish wuxia drama Hero , he was also highly successful in the martial arts genre in the wake of Ang Lee's " Tiger and Dragon " .

He also staged the opera Turandot in the Forbidden City in Beijing in 1998 and again in several European cities in 2005. With more than 500 participants, the staging is very monumental and is mainly performed in football stadiums.

With his company Impression Show he produces and stages large live spectacles in China. In October 2003 he premiered the open air musical "Impression Sanjie Liu". It is set in the beautiful river and mountain landscape on the Li River near Yangshuo . This natural theater has space for 2,000 visitors, and since the world premiere there has been a daily performance with around 600 actors, most of whom are raftsmen from the surrounding area. A similar monumental show was staged on West Lake in Hangzhou . For this purpose, Zhang Yimou had a large stage built in the water, which can be sunk and went up to the evening performances.

At the Olympic Games in Beijing , he directed the spectacular opening ceremony on August 8, 2008 and the closing ceremony on August 24.

After 1988, 2000 and 2003, Zhang Yimou received his fourth invitation to compete at the 60th Berlin Film Festival in 2010 for San qiang pai an jing qi .

Zhang has two sons and a daughter: in January 2014, he was fined US $ 1.24 million for violating China's one-child policy .

In July 2013, it was announced that the script for Zhang Yimou's new film had been approved by the Chinese censors after revision. The title is Guilai (归来 , return). Filming for the film began in September 2013.

The script is based on the novel Lufan yanshi (The criminal Lu Yanshi) by Yan Geling . It tells the story of Lu Yanshi and his wife Feng Wanyu from the 1930s to the 1990s. Lu Yanshi, played by Chen Daoming, is forced by his family to marry Feng Wanyu, played by Gong Li . Lu Yanshi goes to study in the USA and becomes a professor on his return to China. However, he was soon declared a deviator by the new communist government and spent a long time in a labor camp.

At the beginning of March 2014 it became known that the censorship authorities had viewed a first version of the film. Not only was the film approved, it even received a special commendation. The film was submitted for the Cannes International Film Festival from May 14th to 25th, 2014. The film should also be released in Chinese cinemas in mid-May 2014.

In 2019, his feature film "Yi miao zhong" (One Second) was canceled three days before the competition at the Berlin International Film Festival due to alleged problems with post-production. Such a cancellation had never occurred at this film festival before.
