The story of Qiu Ju ( Chinese 秋菊 打官司 , Pinyin Qiū Jú dǎ guānsi ) is a film adaptation of the novel "The Wan Family's Lawsuit" by author Chen Yuan Bin , shot by director Zhang Yimou in 1992.
action
The story takes place in the early 1980s in a village in Shaanxi Province in northwest China. Qiu Ju's husband was kicked between the legs by the village chairman during an argument and had to stay in bed for several days. While resigning himself to the fact, Qiu Ju demands justice. Its name means " chrysanthemum in autumn", which is also the Chinese symbol for bravery and a long life. She goes to the police chief, who negotiates compensation, and the village chairman follows the agreement. When he disrespectfully throws the money at Qiu Ju's feet, the latter turns to higher authorities to demand an apology and wanders from authority to authority, all the way to the Supreme Court in Beijing .
Reviews
“In Zhang Yimou's fifth film, this Michael Kohlhaas variant again focuses on a strong woman who has to fight her way through China's male society. In almost documentary images, the director describes the Chinese legal system and its inability to resolve this conflict. Zhang Yimou - an exception in the Chinese cinema scene - managed a fascinating look into a strange world. "
