biography

Yan Geling was born in Shanghai in 1958. Her father was a well-known writer. Her grandfather had a doctorate in the United States and taught in Xiamen as a professor. He was a well-known translator. As a child, Yan Geling loved music and dance. At the age of twelve she was accepted as a ballet dancer in an entertainment troupe of the People's Liberation Army . She toured all of China. In 1979 she was transferred to the front in the Sino-Vietnamese War . She was released from normal military service as a member of a creative group and wrote the novels "Green Blood" and "Whispering of a Soldier" during this time. Both novels were published by the People's Liberation Army in the 1980s and received awards. In 1981 the film "Herzenssaite", whose screenplay was written by Yan Geling, was released.

In 1986, Yan Geling became a member of the Chinese Writers' Association and met her first husband, Li Kewei. Like Yan Geling, Li Kewei was the child of a writer and a writer himself. They separated because Yan Geling emigrated to the USA and Li Kewei to Australia. In 1989, Yan Geling went to the USA. She studied literary writing at Columbia University and earned a Masters of Arts degree. In the early 1990s she met her second husband, the diplomat Lawrence Walker.

Through her own experience of being a stranger and the tough student jobs she used to finance her studies, she became interested in the life stories of Chinese immigrants to the United States. "Miss Xiaoyu", "Fusang" and other novels and stories were created that revolved around this topic. "Fusang" was released in 1986 in Taiwan. The story "Miss Xiaoyu" received an award from the Taiwanese newspaper Central Daily. It was made into a film by Sylvia Chang . Ang Lee produced the film and co-wrote the script with Sylvia Chang. The film was released in 1995 in Taiwan. Another story by Yan Geling served as a template for the film "Xiu Xiu The Sent Down Girl". The director was Joan Chen . The film was shown in the competition at the Berlinale 1998.

2001 "Fusang" appeared in the USA under the title "The Lost Daughter of Happiness" and became a bestseller. Since 2000 her works have appeared in the People's Republic of China and Taiwan. They have been translated into different languages. Her works have received numerous awards. In 2004, Yan Geling went to Africa with her husband for several years. There was a volume of essays entitled "African Jottings". Many of her works have been used as models for television series and films. The television series were broadcast on various channels in the People's Republic of China. Zhang Yimou , Chen Kaige and Feng Xiaogang made films based on their novels.

In 2018 she was appointed to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , which awards the Oscars every year.
