Karl Kössler

Karl Kössler (* 1924 in Zwittau ) is a German mechanical engineer and former head of the Federal Aviation Office .

Life

Kössler studied mechanical engineering at the TH Munich from 1946 to 1950 . He worked as a designer at BMW and then as a research engineer at the Auto Union in Ingolstadt . In 1956, Kössler began working at Dornier , where he worked in the testing department. He was involved in the development of the Dornier Do 27 , Dornier Do 28 B, Dornier Do 29, Dornier Do 31 and Dornier Do 32 types .

In 1969 Kössler moved to the Federal Aviation Office, which he headed from 1971 to 1987. He was its third leader since its inception. Shortly after he took office, the office's staff was increased by 21 as a consequence of the Hasloh plane crash , in which 22 people were killed. A Bundestag investigation committee had found that the Federal Office was no longer able to cope with the demands of increasing air traffic. Kössler also worked as an author on aviation topics and is a member of the "Working Group on German Aviation History". He is also a long-standing member of the executive committee and chairman of the admission committee of the “Traditionsgemeinschaft Alte Adler e. V. ”and was made an honorary member in 2007.
