action

China around 3,000 years ago in the area of Xi'an : The beautiful court lady Winter (Gong Li) lives at the court of the first Chinese emperor Qin Shihuangdi . General Kam , the ruler's chief military leader, wants to enter into a liaison with Winter. However, she is averse because she is secretly having an affair with the guardsman Tian Fong . When the general finds out and the relationship is exposed, the lovers face death. In her desperation, Winter steals the emperor's elixir of life , a mixture that gives immortality. Winter is able to give Fong the elixir at the last moment before she dies at the stake . Fong is smeared with clay and made into a terracotta statue, but survives thanks to the elixir.

Fong awakens several thousand years later in 1930s China. The emperor has long since died, but had a huge mausoleum built for his demise , which at the time was still undiscovered. Fong is one of several hundred clay soldiers of the terracotta army attached to the tomb .

A film team is shooting a historical film near the grave. Also there is the attractive and naive little film star Lili Chu (also Gong Li), who throws herself at the neck of the main actor Yuan with the prospect of a great career. Yuan and the director use the filming for a completely different reason: They want to search for the mysterious tomb of Qin Shihuangdi, since they suspect that there is not only riches but also the elixir of life. During the expeditions, which are supposed to be kept secret, Lili Yuan keeps getting in the way, because she mistakenly thinks his explorations are filming. During a sightseeing flight, Lili caused engine damage. While Yuan escapes by parachute, Lili crashes in the plane, but survives. In the crash, she accidentally exposes the entrance to the imperial tomb, whereby Tian Fong is released and recognizes the reincarnation of his beloved winter in Lili.

From then on, Fong no longer leaves his beloved's side and protects her from all sorts of dangers that threaten Lili. Unfortunately, the dangers turn out to be common objects and devices of modern times, which are completely unknown to the ancient warrior and seem like magic to him. Lili is the unwanted bodyguard annoying at first, but over time she takes more pleasure in the eccentric.

Yuan and the director have meanwhile seized the opportunity and stepped into the grave. Her attempts to camouflage the whole thing become less and less credible and arouse Fong's curiosity. When he realizes the truth, the old loyalty to the emperor as a guard officer flares up again in Fong and he faces the villains who have brought the mausoleum under their control. Through their activities in the grave, however, the terracotta army wakes up and kills the gangsters. But none of the warriors survived, just as little as Lili. Yuan fell victim to one of the tomb's many death traps. Fong is victorious in the end but is left alone.

The final scene of the film shows Fong 50 years later as a simple worker in the museum that has now been built, who is probably the only one who knows about the real nature of the army. When he happened to look up from his work, he saw a visitor, who in turn was the reincarnation of his old love, and smiled.
