Manorama (real name Gopichanda ; Tamil மனோரமா IAST Maṉōramā ; born May 26, 1937 in Mannargudi , Madras ; † October 10, 2015 in Chennai , Tamil Nadu ) was an Indian actress of Tamil film and theater.

Life

The actress, who was born in what is now the Tiruvarur district and is called "Aachi" by her fans, grew up in Sivaganga in the Chettinad region . She began her career in a regional theater group as a playback singer and actress, where she got her stage name “Manorama”. She was discovered during a performance by the film actor SS Rajendran . In 1958 Manorama made her film debut in Malai Itta Mangai in a comic role. As a comedian , she shaped Tamil entertainment cinema since the 1960s, often together with the co-comedians Nagesh , Chandrababu and Thangavelu .

Directed by AP Nagarajan , she played in Thillana Mohanambal (1968) alongside Sivaji Ganesan and Padmini in a serious, leading role, which lastingly expanded her spectrum beyond the comic subject. Her only appearance in a Hindi film was in Kunwara Baap in 1974 , and she occasionally appeared in Telugu films .

For her work in the film Pudhiya Pathai (1989) she received a National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress. In 2002 the Indian President honored her with the state order Padma Shri .
