Colin Clive (born January 20, 1900 in St. Malo , France , † June 25, 1937 in Hollywood , California , USA ; actually Colin Glenn Clive-Greig ) was a British theater and film actor .

life and career

Clive was born in France to an English colonel. After his military career came to an end with a knee injury, he began acting. In 1927 he worked in Show Boat . Clive repeated his role in Journey's End , directed by James Whale , in the 1930 film adaptation, which was also directed by Whale. He achieved great fame through the role of Dr. Frankenstein in the classic film Frankenstein from 1931. He repeated the role of the scientist Frankenstein in Frankenstein's Bride in 1935 , again directed by James Whale. In the 1934 film adaptation of the novel Jane Eyre he starred alongside Virginia Bruce as Rochester. The actor was a descendant of General Robert Clive and played a supporting role in the 1935 biographical film Battle for India , in which Ronald Colman played the victor of the Battle of Plassey .

Colin Clive died of tuberculosis in 1937 at the age of 37 . He is said to have been an alcoholic all his life . From 1929 until his death he was married to the actress Jeanne de Casalis.
