Snitz Edwards
Snitz Edwards (born January 1, 1862 or January 1, 1868 in Budapest , † May 1, 1937 in Los Angeles , California ); actually Edward Neumann , was an American film and theater actor of Hungarian origin.
Life
Snitz Edwards was born into a Jewish household in Hungary. He emigrated to the United States and became a stage actor on Broadway from 1900 . He had his first role in 1900 in the musical comedy Little Red Riding Hood . He played on various Broadway stages under the direction of Arthur Hammerstein and Charles Frohman . In vaudeville shows, he often appeared in a number in which he imitated the German dialect. After a theater career of around 30 years, Edwards switched to the film business in 1915, where he quickly rose to become one of the most distinctive supporting actors of Hollywood's silent film era.
Due to his distinctive, almost "monkey-like" face, Edwards was mostly cast in slightly comical supporting roles. At the height of his career in the early 1920s, he appeared in front of the camera with Barbara La Marr , Douglas Fairbanks , Wallace Reid , Lionel Barrymore , Ramón Novarro , Marion Davies and others. His most famous film today is probably made with Lon Chaney sen. and Mary Philbin in the box office hit The Phantom of the Opera . He also appeared in leading roles in three of Buster Keaton's films , such as his faithful servant in The Killer of Alabama (1926). With the start of the sound film era in 1927, Edwards increasingly withdrew from the acting business, not mainly because of his Hungarian accent, but because of ongoing health problems. He had his last small role in 1931 in William A. Wellman's gangster drama The Public Enemy .
Edwards spent the last years of his life bedridden before he died in 1937 of complications from arthritis . From his second marriage to Eleanor Taylor from 1906 until his death, he had three children; his first marriage had previously been divorced.
