In the 1960s, Gitte and Rex Gildo formed a German hit duo that hit the charts with several titles.

Career

Gitte Hænning (* 1946) had become a child star in her native Denmark before she brought producer Nils Nobach to Germany in 1959 and got her a record deal with the Cologne record company Electrola . In contrast to Rex Gildo (1936 - 1999), who had already achieved several hit parades by the end of 1962 (most recently the number one hit Speedy Gonzales ), Gitte, as she was called on her records in Germany, had her big breakthrough by 1962 not done yet.

In 1963, Norddeutsche Rundfunk wanted to produce a TV show with Gitte and needed a partner for her. Rex Gildo, who, like Gitte, was under contract with Electrola, seemed to be the most suitable for the job, and so the duo "Gitte and Rex Gildo" was born. With the two of them, the show No Day Without Music - A Rendezvous with Gitte & Rex was produced, in which they also sang together. Electrola took this as an opportunity to make a long-term pair of records out of the two and, in the summer of 1963, after Gitte won the German Schlager Festival in 1963 with her song Ich will 'nen Cowboy and then stormed the charts, the first Single with the two out.

The A-side title Vom Stadtpark die Laternen developed into a best seller and reached number one in the German charts. By 1965 Electrola had produced six singles with Gitte and Rex Gildo, of which a total of six titles were included in the German hit lists. With the song Now the world turns only around you , the couple took part in the German Schlager Festival in 1964 and reached 3rd place. The song also became the title of a hit film in which performers played. 1964 with Gitte and Rex Gildo under the title Hokus-Pokus with Gitte & Rex another TV show was broadcast.

In 1965, the duo separated on the initiative of Gitte. Both continued their solo careers, in which they could post further successes in the following years.
