Robert Clarke James , often cited as Robert C. James or RC James, (born July 30, 1918 in Bloomington , Indiana , † June 28, 2003 ) was an American mathematician who dealt with functional analysis .

biography

James received his PhD in 1946 with Aristotle Demetrius Michal at the California Institute of Technology (Orthogonality in normed linear spaces). He then spent a year as a Benjamin Peirce Fellow at Harvard University , then professor at Haverford College . In 1962/63 he was at the Institute for Advanced Study . He was then founding director of the Mathematics Institute at Harvey Mudd College and the Mathematics Faculty at Claremont Graduate University in Claremont, California .

James constructed important counterexamples in the theory of Banach spaces ( James space 1951, James Baum space, etc.), characterized reflexivity for Banach spaces with an unconditional shudder basis, and proved James's compactness criterion named after him .

With his father Glenn James (1882-1961), a professor at UCLA who was known as the editor of Mathematics Magazine , he wrote a mathematics dictionary.

He is an honorary doctor of Kent State University , a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Federation of American Scientists .
