Uwu Lena is an eight-piece German pop music group . On the occasion of the Soccer World Cup 2010 , she recorded a cover version of the Eurovision Song Contest winner song Satellite, sung by Lena Meyer-Landrut , by Julie Frost and John Gordon under the title Schland o Schland, and achieved a chart success in Germany as a result of a great hype .

history

The name of the group "Uwu Lena" is a paragram or a suitcase word , formed from the words Uwe Seeler , Vuvuzela and Lena . The group consists mainly of students from Münster . In addition to Christian Landgraf, the text author of Schland o Schland and medical students, this includes the photographer Timo Bühring, Nikolai Gaschütz, Sören Glück, Johannes Jötten, Robert Krotoszynski, Matthias Landgraf and Moritz Schefers. Even before the emergence of Schland o Schland , they often made music together, but without pursuing commercial intentions. The publication of the song shortly before the World Cup was, according to Johannes Jötten, a coincidence, actually the song was only intended as fun for friends and acquaintances. After the publication of Schland o Schland on Universal Music , Uwu Lena appeared at a number of events and television programs, including on June 17, 2010 as a surprise guest at the JuWi festival in her hometown of Münster and on June 20, 2010 in the ZDF television garden .

Formation of Schland o Schland

According to the band, Christian Landgraf had the idea for a song with the title line "Schland o Schland" on the tune of Satellite the day after Lena Meyer-Landrut's victory with this title at the 2010 Eurovision Song Contest . This resulted in a song text within two days, written by Landgraf, which revolves around the German national football team and their participation in the 2006 World Cup , the 2008 European Championship and the 2010 World Cup . The song consists of three German-language stanzas as well as a chorus and four English-language lines at the end, which, according to Landgraf, are an "homage to the original song".

The deduced from "Germany" portmanteau " Schland " was first held during the accompanying coverage of the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Stefan Raab's show TV total media attention. It has been protected as a word mark since November 18, 2005, and the rights to it are held by Raab's production company Raab TV GmbH, in which the umbrella organization Brainpool has held a 50 percent stake since 2008. Raab TV GmbH sells various merchandising products with the brand name "Schland" .

Production and publication on the Internet

The production of the song took place a short time after the text was finished and took a week to complete. Nikolai Gaschütz's lead vocals were recorded in Kiel, further recordings and mastering took place in Münster. The music video for the song was recorded under Schefers' direction in collaboration with Timo Bühring on the evening of June 9, 2010 in the south park of Münster. A day later, it was published on the YouTube video portal . The protagonist of the video is Christian Landgraf, he can be seen in a disguise that imitates Lena Meyer-Landrut and is wearing a black mini dress and a long hair wig. In addition to Landgraf, other members of Uwu Lena and some extras appear in costumes typical of football fans. Gaschütz, the lead singer of the song, was not involved in the video recording.

The production quality and targeting of the music video soon aroused the suspicion of the professional world and led to speculation about authorship and actual background, which can, however, also be explained by the well-documented history of its creation. Some members of Uwu Lena work part-time with videos and music and can refer to several years of production experience. Moritz Schefers, who is responsible for camera and direction of the music video for Schland o Schland and a student of communication studies , runs a small studio for multimedia productions, including commercial assignments , together with Johannes Jötten, who only works as a background singer at Uwu Lena . Already for the 2006 World Cup, Jötten, who among other things offers workshops for hip-hop video productions, repackaged Oliver Pocher 's World Cup song Black and White in blue and yellow and recorded it with his teammates at the local Gimbter football club in the recording studio as well as a small edition on CD produced.

Copyright dispute

On June 11, 2010, the music publisher EMI Music Publishing , which holds the exploitation rights to the composition Satellite , prohibited further distribution of the video by telephone, as the publication of a cover version with new text usually requires approval. Uwu Lena herself then deleted the video from YouTube. However, the cancellation and the prohibition of further spread of the video wore against the background of immediately informed Münster local press - which the messages also stante pede to dpa forwarded - rather help to increase the attention on. This phenomenon is commonly referred to as the Streisand effect : other YouTube users uploaded the video again to the video portal, so that the number of viewers increased exponentially . The music group's website under the domain www.schlandrut.de was also taken offline for a short time after EMI requested it to be deleted, but later put back online without the video.

Commercial publication

Shortly after the video was published on YouTube, the rights holders of Satellite EMI Music Publishing, Universal Music Germany and Brainpool, led by Stefan Raab , advised on how to proceed. Finally, it was agreed to aim for a commercial release, and so Universal Music and Raab TV GmbH signed Uwu Lena. The song's single was released on June 16, 2010 as a download and on June 22, 2010 as a CD single . On June 18, 2010 the song reached first place on the German iTunes store charts. In the German single charts , Schland o Schland reached number four. After the authors of “Satellite” and Stefan Raabs agreed to the use of the word “Schland”, the eight guys from Münster got together with a management team from the media industry, consisting of Ulf-Gunnar Switalski and Michael “Mike” Schmitz, who was born in Münster .

Second single "In der Diskothek"

On November 5, 2010 the single "In der Diskothek" was released.

The eight people from Münster were able to win over the jazz musician and television presenter Götz Alsmann , also from Münster, for the video . Sascha “Busy” Bühren was responsible for mastering the single, who had also mastered Lena's Grand Prix winner song “Satellite”, as well as the multiple platinum albums by Peter Fox , Silbermond and Unheilig .

"Sound shift"

Christian Landgraf and seven other musicians competed with the title Magic for our song for Denmark , the preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 under the band name Lautverschaltung .

reception

The first press reports about the Schland o Schland published on YouTube were published on June 11, 2010 in the Münsteraner daily newspapers. At this point, the reports also made reference to the fact that the copyright holders of the original song had requested the cover version be deleted. In the course of popularizing the song, numerous media reported; the dpa news agency took up the topic on June 14, 2010. After the commercial single was announced, there were reports on the song and the legal problems on June 15, 2010 in the ZDF morning magazine and the local time on WDR television. The tabloid magazines Brisant and taff treated the topic in the broadcasts of 16 June 2010. On the same day reported the bottom -contribution the evening news about the song and suggested that Uwu Lena could be the "secret stars of the World Cup."

In their World Cup reports, Zeit Online describedthe song as the new "World Cup anthem". RP Online presented the funniest World Cup songs from the net and said that Schland o Schland was "already the classic among Internet World Cup hits". Oddsmeter.de disguised the song as "a cheap carnival song that can only be endured with at least 2 per thousand".

Occasionally there were statements that the genesis of Schland o Schland presented in the vast majority of the publications could not correspond to the facts and only serve to generate the greatest possible sales-promoting hype .
