history

Center of Gimbte, with a view of St. Johannes

The history of Gimbte goes back to the early Middle Ages around the 8th and 9th centuries. However, finds indicate that people stayed here as early as the Stone Age . The origin of today's gimbte were two drubbel , that is, a close group of farmhouses. The nucleus was the Schulze-Bisping farm, which was donated to the Überwasser Abbey in 1040 by the Prince-Bishop of Münster, Hermann I. Around the same time, the Church of St. John was built as a daughter parish of St. Martinus . Together with the parish of Greven, Gimbte belonged to the Wolbeck office until the dissolution of the Duchy of Münster in 1802, before it was slammed under the rule of the French to the Mairie St. Mauritz. From 1821 it belonged to the Greven office and from 1841 it was an independent rural community within the office. In the 1930s, the bed of the Ems was moved a few hundred meters away from the village to reduce the risk of flooding.

With the territorial reform , which came into force on January 1, 1975, Gimbte lost its independence and has been part of the city of Greven ever since. Due to the structural change in agriculture, Gimbte lost more and more of its character as a farming village since the 1980s. In addition to a few courtyards, single-family houses shape the townscape today. Gimbte is a popular destination for cyclists from the area, not least because of its picturesque town center. The cabaret market, which has been held annually since 1985, is now of supra-regional importance.
