Amphoe Si Mueang Mai ( Thai : อำเภอ ศรี เมือง ใหม่ ) is a district ( Amphoe - Administrative District) in the northeast of the Ubon Ratchathani Province . The province of Ubon Ratchathani is located in the northeast region of Thailand , the so-called Isan .
geography
Neighboring counties (clockwise from southeast): the Amphoe Khong Chiam , Phibun Mangsahan , Tan Sum , Trakan Phuet Phon and Pho Sai . In the east on the other bank of the Mekong lies the Laotian province of Salavan .
The district's most important water resource is the Mekong .
history
Originally the area was a district ( Khwaeng ) within the historical city ( Mueang ) Khong Chiam. The district head was Upahad ( อุปฮาด ), who reported directly to the governor of Ubon Ratchathani. After the name of the district was Suwan Warin for a few years, it was given the historical name Khong Chiam again in 1939.
On September 14, 1971, Khong Chiam County was renamed Si Mueang Mai. At the same time, the Ban Dan district, which had been separated from Khong Chiam in 1959, was renamed Khong Chiam because it is the historic center of the historical Mueang .
