The Fichte-Gymnasium Hagen is a municipal high school in the city of Hagen . The grammar school has existed for more than 200 years, is the oldest grammar school in the city of Hagen and is attended by almost 1000 students. These are taught by almost 70 teachers.

The Fichte-Gymnasium Hagen is in possession of the seal of individual support. The school is also a member of the Association of Mathematical and Scientific Excellence Centers in Schools (MINT-EC). There is a MINT-EC class in each grade of the lower grades, which is specifically taught in the natural science subjects.

history

Today's high school was founded on the initiative of the then Hagen pastor JF Dahlenkamp, as a kind of school council on behalf of the Prussian government , on November 4, 1799 as the "action, community and Latin school" at the end of the so-called " educational century ". For his project he was looking for colleagues, preferably local manufacturers , tradespeople, merchants and citizens of the city of Hagen, who, in view of the rapidly developing economy, were interested in the children no longer having to be educated in cities further away. The necessary education should be given in a separate city school. Hagen had town charter since September 3, 1746, and it started with 40 students who were taught by five teachers. The entire curriculum included 16 subjects, including German , mathematics , Latin , French , English , history , geography and drawing , as well as subjects such as accounting , fencing and dancing that were unusual for the time .

The first few years were complicated due to organizational and financial problems, which only changed in the second half of the 19th century with a strong economic boom and a rapid increase in the population. Under the direction of the then mayor Johann Diedrich Friedrich Schmidt, the city reorganized the school and hired Heinrich Stahlberg, a headmaster with foresight. Under his direction, the school was expanded into a secondary school with 400 students and 25 teachers by 1895 . In 1877 the building was occupied at its current location on Bergstrasse, and in 1882 it was officially recognized as a “Realgymnasium and Gymnasium”. In 1883, the first Abitur exams were taken in the educational institution .

At the end of the 19th century, the “Doppelanstalt” enjoyed an outstanding reputation with high social acceptance and was considered the most important educational institution in the city. During the imperial era , the school was integrated into the ruling system and conveyed the usual guiding principles such as education for fear of God and morality, as well as love for the German emperor and the fatherland . In addition, the subjects German, mathematics and Latin had the highest professional share.

With the beginning of the First World War , the grammar school was temporarily converted into a barracks . Many students were also used at war collections and those over 16 became members of the youth armed forces. Quite a few primary school students took an emergency maturity test and were sent to the front as so-called “volunteers”. In 1918, with the end of the First World War and the transformation of the imperial monarchy into a parliamentary democracy , the school system was also reformed. For the first time, parent and student councils were approved and formed, which were called upon to actively promote collaboration between school and home. The student councils were also seen as a training ground for political forms of action, whereby the students did not achieve joint responsibility for shaping the school, but instead had to be limited to a limited opportunity for discussion on the way to realizing a sense of community. Nevertheless, the then head of the school, Dr. Walther Hohmann , placed particular emphasis on maintaining contacts with the two democratically elected representatives. However, the students objected to the establishment of a student council as a democratically legitimized representation of the entire student body and organized a student strike, which was also supposed to prevent the removal of the emperor's portraits from the auditorium. This example showed that the student body was still deeply connected to the structures of the government of the imperial era.

When the National Socialists came to power, everyday school life also changed at this grammar school. The moral concepts to be conveyed were no longer called justice, freedom, maturity, but “people and fatherland, blood and soil, honor and loyalty”. This school also received content, including a. the upbringing to become 'National Socialist' people, which, according to today's point of view, could not be acquired through rational considerations, but rather meant an "internalization" of these "truths of faith". An orderly, classical lesson in the narrower sense, as it had developed here since the school was founded, no longer took place in the following years. Rather, conveying the ideology of National Socialism and also the mental preparation of the students for the Second World War became superficial "educational topics". In 1938 the facility was given the addition of "spruce". Just one year later, with the attack on Poland in September 1939, first the male teachers and a short time later the older students were drafted into the Wehrmacht as soldiers . The younger students were used for war purposes. In 1943 the school building on Bergstrasse was badly damaged in the course of the numerous Allied bombing raids on the city.

After the end of the Second World War, there was a lack of rooms, furniture, heating material, textbooks and teachers to cope with everyday school life. In 1948, the makeshift school operations on Bergstrasse were resumed, some of which took place in shifts, as the former Jahn secondary school had to be housed here next to the former Fichte school. Over the next 16 years, the provisional facility developed through extensive school operations into a facility with completely inadequate premises. The number of students rose at times to over 1,000. In 1965, therefore, the mathematical and scientific branch was relocated to the newly founded Theodor-Heuss-Gymnasium, which had been set up in a newly constructed building. After the separation, around 700 students remained in the Fichte-Gymnasium and this facility has since been continued as the municipal Fichte-Gymnasium of the city of Hagen, with a focus on new languages without Latin. In the 1980s, the number of students decreased for demographic reasons , but increased again to over 800 in the 1990s. About 1000 students are currently being taught at this grammar school.

school

In the lower secondary level , classes 5–9 are taught in 4, rarely 5 classes. A class consists of an average of 31 students. At the end of grade 5, the student has to choose either Latin or French. A student can of course take both subjects, see the following section "Revolving door model". At the end of grade 7, compulsory elective II is chosen. Are offered art , bio - chemistry , future technology , English literature and provided, not yet chosen French. In addition to these subjects, computer science or math can also be chosen on the PC, but only one of the two comes about. In math on the PC, the focus of the lesson is more on math . At the end of grade 9, the upper school elections take place. In the secondary level can after the introductory period high school be acquired. The Latinum can also be acquired after the introductory phase if the performance is just enough . Then qualification phase 1 begins. From qualification phase 1, each point is counted. In addition, the advanced course begins with qualification phase 1 (Q1). After successfully completing qualification phase 2 (Q2), you have acquired the general university entrance qualification with the Abitur .

Until 2012, the 45-minute model was used at the Fichte-Gymnasium. Together with the Ricarda-Huch-Gymnasium , they switched to the 67.5-minute model. In order to reduce the number of afternoon lessons, since the 2014/2015 school year, lower secondary level I has been taught according to the 70-minute model, while upper secondary level continues to have 67.5-minute lessons. Because of the different start and end times of the lessons, the school bell was switched off.

Revolving door model

At the Fichte-Gymnasium there is a so-called revolving door model in which particularly linguistically gifted students learn French and Latin at the same time from grade 6 onwards .
Since there are two Latin / French lessons per week, the pupil goes one time to one subject and the other time and has a classmate hand over the missed subject matter.

Buildings, grounds and surroundings

Main entrance to the Fichte-Gymnasium

The high school consists of two buildings. The building, the main entrance of which is on Goldbergstrasse and houses the secretariat and the headmaster's office, is called the “main building”. This building also houses the computer room, the natural science departments (from bottom to top: physics, biology, chemistry), homework support and the so-called "Lichthof".

There is also the “post office”, in which the art and music departments are located. There is also access to the auditorium from the post office building. The gyms are also right next to the post office.

Since 2010 there has been a double-decker bridge ("transition") connecting these buildings, which also houses classrooms. The cafeteria was built directly under the bridge .

The school has two schoolyards, one of which was only put into operation in the 2014/2015 school year, this consists of the former parking lot of the Willy-Weyer-Bad , which has been converted into a nursing home . The schoolyards are connected by the track that was once the route of the Volmetalbahn .

The Cuno vocational college , the general hospital in Hagen , the Emil Schumacher and Karl Ernst Osthaus museums and downtown Hagen are also close to the grammar school .

The “Fichte-Gymnasium” bus stop is right next to the grammar school and is served by lines 521 and 525 of the Hagener Straßenbahn AG . After a five-minute walk, you can also reach the central transfer station “Volme Galerie / Stadtmitte” in the heart of the city center.

Quality analysis for schools in North Rhine-Westphalia

After a quality analysis was introduced in August 2006 for all schools in the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia , which pursues the goal of ensuring the quality of schools and providing sustainable impulses for their further development, this analysis from November 8th to 11th In 2010 the Fichte-Gymnasium was awarded grade 4 thirteen times and level 3 twelve times. This result means that with grade 4, the highest grade is represented by the majority. It is worth mentioning here that, for example, the evaluation of the categories “Individual support and support”, “Student counseling / student care”, “School program” and “Satisfaction of those involved” were evaluated with this. This makes the school one of the best 20% of the schools in North Rhine-Westphalia analyzed so far. The professional competence of the staff and their consistent further development, as well as the management responsibility of the school management, were mostly honored with top marks.

Long-term ecological projects

In May 1998 a photovoltaic system was installed on the roof of the school , which converts sunlight directly into electricity as a 2.2 kWp system. This system was built in cooperation between the students and local business enterprises and was supplemented by a second system in summer 2010. The project has received several awards.
