The Kostal Group is a global, independent family company with headquarters in Lüdenscheid that develops and produces electronic and mechatronic products. Around 20,000 employees work at 46 locations in 21 countries. Various industrial companies, in particular automobile manufacturers and their suppliers, as well as companies from the photovoltaic sector are among the customers.

history

Kostal was founded in 1912 by Leopold Kostal as LK . In 1927, the field of activity was expanded from installation materials to automotive electronics . In 1935, Leopold's son, Kurt, joined the company; Kostal had around 240 employees for the company's 25th anniversary. In 1953, the company's focus was shifted to the development and production of articles for the automotive industry . In 1972 Helmut Kostal joined the company, in 1973 the first foreign branch was founded in Mexico , followed by a branch in Brazil in 1978 . After the transformation into a GmbH & Co. KG in 1981, the company expanded in the following years to other countries, including Ireland , Great Britain , Japan , China and France . The contact systems division was founded in 1993, followed by the automotive electrics, industrial electrics and testing technology divisions in 1995, which were transferred to an independent GmbH in 2004 . In 2008 Kostal entered the Indian market with the help of a joint venture, and in 2009 it entered solar technology . The company has been led by Andreas Kostal since 2011.

Business areas

The automotive electrics, industrial electrics and contact systems divisions are certified according to the quality management standards DIN EN ISO 9001 or IATF 16949 , ISO 26262 and the environmental management standard DIN EN ISO 14001 .

Kostal Automobil Elektrik GmbH

In the automotive electrics division , Kostal develops and produces products for vehicle body electrics , including steering column modules , operating elements and switches, on-board control devices and door control devices. This division employs 2,350 people in Germany and generates global sales of € 1.165 billion (as of December 31, 2010). Kostal has a market share of over 30% in this segment .

Kostal Kontakt Systeme GmbH

In the Contact Systems division, Kostal develops and produces connector systems . KOSTAL Kontakt Systeme GmbH was based in Hagen from 2005 to 2012 . In 2010 a plant was acquired on Timberg in Lüdenscheid. After numerous renovations and the construction of a new high-bay warehouse, production started at Timberg in mid-2012.

Kostal Industrie Elektrik GmbH

Just like Kostal Kontakt Systeme GmbH, Kostal Industrie Elektrik GmbH moved to the Hagen location in 2005. The company's core fields are photovoltaic systems, measurement and control technology and drive technology .

Kostal Solar Electric GmbH

At the end of 2006, Kostal Solar Electric GmbH was founded in Freiburg as a subsidiary of KOSTAL Industrie GmbH & Co. KG. It serves as a sales company for string inverters and hybrid inverters of the brands PIKO ( Photovoltaic Inverter Kostal ) and Plenticore as well as software for the design and monitoring of inverters.

SOMA GmbH

Soma GmbH develops and implements mechanical, mechatronic and electronic products for automation , dosing and testing technology.

The system house at Kostal was discontinued and its former employees were divided into other areas.
