Christel Neudeck b. Schanzen (born December 12, 1942 in Dinslaken ) is a German social worker and co-founder of Cap Anamur / Deutsche Not-Doctors and Grünhelme e. V.

life and work

Christel Neudeck was born into a working-class family on the Lower Rhine. Her father died shortly after her birth as a soldier in Stalingrad. She grew up with two siblings. Her mother supported the family as a homework seamstress.

She has lived in Troisdorf in North Rhine-Westphalia since 1976 . In 1979 she founded the charitable association Cap Anamur with her husband Rupert Neudeck (1939–2016), with whom she had been married since 1970, and friends (including Heinrich Böll ). The first purpose of the association was to save the so-called boat people . Christel Neudeck organized donations and rescue operations for Cap Anamur for 14 years and looked after employees "from the living room at home", while Rupert Neudeck provided on-site help. At the same time she raised her three children, two daughters and a son. Günter Grass gives a portrait of her during this time , who lets a (fictional) visitor, an official from Bonn, say about her: “Cheerfully relaxed, always busy, be it at the stove with the stew [...] or her hung on the phone. In addition, visitors kept coming, including doctors offering their services. In between the three children. [...] In this case we are dealing with idealists who don't give a damn about existing regulations, guidelines and so on. Rather, like this good woman in her row house, they are absolutely convinced that they can move the world. ”In 2003, she and her husband founded the Grünhelme association .

Since 2005 she has been working as a telephone counselor for the Catholic Church. She has been a member of the Board of Trustees of the Friends of Abraham Society since 2010 , to which her husband was a member until his death.

Honors

  • Christel and Rupert Neudeck received the Erich Fromm Prize for life's work in April 2016 . Wolfgang Thierse gave the laudation . In the history of the Fromm Prize, it was a first for a married couple to receive the prize. "On closer inspection, however, it quickly becomes clear that Rupert Neudeck would never have been able to do his immense commitment if his wife Christel hadn't actively supported all the projects with her own ideas."
  • 2016 - State Prize of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia , together with her late husband Rupert Neudeck
