Marion Dönhoff Prize

The Marion Dönhoff Prize for international understanding and reconciliation has been awarded annually since 2003 by the weekly newspaper Die Zeit , the Zeit Foundation Ebelin and Gerd Bucerius and the Marion Dönhoff Foundation . The main prize honors personalities who work for understanding and reconciliation between peoples. In addition, a sponsorship award is given to organizations to support their ongoing projects. The award ceremony takes place on the first Sunday of Advent in the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg.

The prize is named after Marion Countess Dönhoff (1909–2002), who for decades was committed to understanding and reconciliation between peoples. In their spirit, the Marion Dönhoff Foundation, founded in 1988, is committed to promoting friendly relationships between Germans and citizens in Eastern Europe.

Until 2010 the main prize was endowed with 20,000 euros and the sponsorship award with 10,000 euros. From 2011 to 2014 the sponsorship award was endowed with 20,000 euros, the main award was awarded as an honorary award. Since 2015, both awards have been endowed with 20,000 euros each.
