Evelyn Hecht-Galinski

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Evelyn Hecht-Galinski (* 1949 in Berlin , born Evelyn Galinski, from 1972 Evelyn Hecht, from 1992 Hecht-Galinski) is a German publicist and founder of the German department of the organization Jewish Voice for Just Peace in the Middle East . She is the daughter of the chairman of the Central Council of Jews in Germany , Heinz Galinski, who died in 1992 . Her arguments with the leadership of the Central Council and a legal dispute over allegations of anti-Semitism against her attracted attention , especially in Germany .

Life

Family and work

Hecht-Galinski was born in 1949 as the daughter of the later chairman of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, Heinz Galinski , and attended the Emil Molt School in Berlin . In 1972 she married Benjamin Hecht, who ran “Hecht Textilien Vertriebsgesellschaft mbH” and took her into the company. After the company was dissolved (1995) and then insolvent (2001), the childless couple moved to Malsburg-Marzell .

Activism and controversy

Criticism of Israel and Judaism

Hecht-Galinski regularly writes guest comments on NRhZ-Online - Neue Rheinische Zeitung and practices harsh criticism of Israel. In July 2012, under the heading “When the Star of David slips into your underpants”, she described the current government under Netanyahu as the “fascist-racist government” of a “Zionist apartheid regime of Israel”. In August 2014, Hecht-Galinski published an article in which she described Benjamin Netanyahu as "just as bad as the IS commanders who murder and destroy". In 2007, Hecht-Galinski had called comparisons between the Israeli-occupied territories and the Warsaw ghetto , employed by the German bishops Gregor Maria Hanke and Walter Mixa , "very moderate": Ghetto is a common term today. In this context, she referred to her father's motto in life: "I did not survive Auschwitz in order to keep silent to a new injustice". Critics repeatedly accused Hecht-Galinski of “Jewish self-hatred” . In 2010, Monika Schwarz-Friesel cited Hecht-Galinski's argumentation and her equations of Israeli politics with the Nazi regime as an example of the most common form of current anti-Semitism.

During the circumcision debate in Germany in 2012 she spoke out against the circumcision of infants according to the Jewish tradition ( Brit Mila ), a view that she affirmed in 2014.

In the course of the discussion about Günter Grass ' controversial poem What Must Be Said, Hecht-Galinski stood behind her youth idol Grass and took his position. In connection with the speech of the then Iranian President Mahmud Ahmadineschād at the conference “A World Without Zionism ” in 2005, she represents the translation of the Islamic scholar Katajun Amirpur , according to which Ahmadineschād was not talking about wiping Israel off the map , but removing the Israeli system to want.

In 2009, the German-Israeli lawyer Felicia Langer received the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class at the suggestion of Hecht-Galinski , which sparked a heated dispute, as Langer had appeared as a sharp critic of Israel. As early as 2006, Hecht-Galinski took the side of Langer and sharply criticized the Else-Lasker-Schüler-Forum who was invited.

Disputes with the Presidium of the Central Council of Jews

Hecht-Galinski had attended a Berlin Waldorf school. She later publicly opposed allegations that these were fueling negative attitudes towards Judaism and expressed astonishment at corresponding "blanket and unproven" statements by Paul Spiegel . She has little relation to anthroposophy and describes herself as "educationally and traditionally connected with Judaism, but not in a religious sense". After the death of her father in 1992, she left the Jewish religious community because “even as a child she had nothing to do with religion.” She also added the maiden name Galinski to the married name Hecht.

In the debate about the resignation of Michel Friedman in 2003, Hecht-Galinski criticized the leadership of the Central Council of Jews. She called it “unbearable” that the Central Council President Paul Spiegel had proposed Friedman's return to his public office shortly after the penal order against Friedman was issued, and claimed that neither Paul Spiegel as President nor Charlotte Knobloch as his deputy were suitable for the interests of the Jews to represent in Germany.

In connection with Operation Sommerregen and the open letter from Rolf Verleger , Hecht-Galinski accused the Central Council of Jews in 2006 of not representing the social interests of members of the Jewish communities in Germany. Instead, he acts as the "mouthpiece of the Israeli government" and tries to declare any criticism as anti-Semitism. Israel's policy in the Gaza Strip is "no longer justifiable".

Legal disputes with Henryk M. Broder

In 2008, Hecht-Galinski explained in an episode of the radio show Hallo OB-Wagen of the WDR :

“I also know from my own experience when I had interviews on Deutschlandfunk, when the Central Council or the Israeli ambassador immediately called and protested. I know how and how the Israeli-Jewish lobby that exists, and there is nothing to be said against it, is now called itself that. And what you have brought here sounds a bit like the 'Broder Connection', but it is so uninteresting, it is so below the level, but otherwise there is massive pressure, and the pressure is there too very successful, and I have to say that. "

- Hecht-Galinski : broadcast Hello OB van

As a result, the publicist Henryk M. Broder wrote a letter to the WDR director Monika Piel about Hecht-Galinski in May 2008 , which he and the answer to it in his blog on the Internet platform The Axis of the Good under the heading Great days with Jewish experts published:

“Any Cologne jerk with two per thousand in their blood would even recognize on Weiberfastnacht that Ms. EHG is a hysterical housewife in need of recognition, who speaks for no one except for herself and only speaks nonsense. Her specialty is anti - Semitic- anti - Zionist thoughtlessness ... "

- Broder

In response to Broder's demand that immigration policy be tailored to economic interests, Hecht-Galinski described him at an event as an “immigrant that nobody here in Germany really wanted”, and also as a “polarizer who only criticizes all critics with insults and personalities Defamation covers ”.

A legal dispute with Broder followed, which led to a debate about the relationship between anti-Semitism and criticism of Israel in German and English-language media.

Hecht-Galinski first obtained an injunction , which for the time being forbade Broder to use the term “anti-Semitic” in his criticism. The first judicial instance ruled that it was a value judgment which exceeded the limit of abusive criticism , so that the plaintiff could demand an omission. Broder successfully appealed against this. The Cologne Higher Regional Court lifted the preliminary injunction on the grounds that Broder's criticism was exaggerated and abusive, but was ultimately covered by the fundamental right to express one's opinion, as it could be understood as a contribution to a question that had a significant impact on the public. In the main proceedings before the Cologne Regional Court , Hecht-Galinski's action for an injunction was dismissed in September 2008.

In 2008 Hecht-Galinski called Broder a "porn writer". His injunction was also dismissed on August 17, 2009. The Germany radio devalued the conflict between Broder and Hecht-Galinski as "passionate discharged Posse ".

Journalism

Hecht-Galinski wrote articles for the anti-Zionist blog NRhZ-Online and for her own blog as well as letters to the editor. In 2012 she published The Eleventh Commandment in Palmyra Verlag : Israel may do anything. Plain texts about anti-Semitism and criticism of Israel . In 2014, NRhZ-Online awarded her the Cologne Karls Prize for committed literature and journalism . The laudation was given by Ken Jebsen . Hecht-Galinski presented Walter Herrmann , the initiator of the Cologne Wailing Wall , with the prize money of 196 euros, symbolic of the 196th birthday of the namesake Karl Marx .
