history

It started with an illustrated book about Bob Dylan's 1987 European tour. Stein was the only photographer to accompany Dylan across Europe, and his photos formed the basis for the first book published by Palmyra Verlag. Palmyra Verlag became known in 1992 with the book Allahs Plagiator by the Hamburg orientalist Gernot Rotter , in which the famous television journalist Gerhard Konzelmann found plagiarism and one-sided and distorted reporting on the Arabs and Islam.

In addition to this book on the Konzelmann affair , a critical book on Peter Scholl-Latour was published in 1993 under the title Das Schwert des “Expert” .

program

Under the motto “From Arafat to Zappa ”, two main focuses determine the publishing program. On the one hand, there are political non-fiction books on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict ( Middle East conflict ) and on the Arab-Islamic world. The complexity of this region should be made more transparent by conveying political, historical and cultural background information. The publishing activity is also determined by the need for a dialogue between Israelis and Palestinians as well as the West and the Arab-Islamic world. The foundations of a just peace solution form the central subject of many publications in the publisher's Middle East program. So far, books by Uri Avnery , Amnon Kapeliuk, Edward Said , Mahmoud Darwisch , Rafik Schami and Mohammed Arkoun have appeared.

The second focus of the publisher is on books on challenging rock and pop music including folk , blues , songwriters and world music. In addition to books about Bob Dylan, Palmyra has published memoirs by Johnny Cash , BB King , Eric Burdon and the concert promoter Fritz Rau . In the “In my own words” series, bands and performers such as the Rolling Stones , Pink Floyd , The Doors , John Lennon , Frank Zappa , Bob Marley and Udo Lindenberg report on their lives and their music.
