Euractiv ( spelling EURACTIV ; formerly EurActiv ) is an Internet news portal founded in 1999 by Christophe Leclercq . It deals with topics related to the European Union ; the homepage is multilingual (12 languages). The programmatic focus of the reporting is political debates between governments, business and civil society.

Main topics

Euractiv's news offerings include several thematic sections , which are roughly based on the policy areas in which the European Union has competencies; there are also overarching headings such as “future of the EU”, “public affairs” or “EU domestic policy”. In addition to the current news item, the messages usually include an overview of the next steps to be taken to reach a decision, the positions that key stakeholders have expressed and other links on the topic.

In addition to the news, Euractiv publishes “Special Reports”, which summarize information on larger subject areas, as well as interviews, “Policy Briefs” and analyzes and comments from external authors, such as politicians, entrepreneurs or freelance journalists.

All articles appear in English and are either translated into German and French or provided with summaries in these languages.

Locations

Euractiv's largest office is the Brussels office ; the respective country offices also have their own editorial offices. The country offices in Brussels, London, Paris and Berlin form the core of the media network and are part of the EURACTIV.com PLC company. There are also partner portals in France, Italy , Spain , Greece , Bulgaria , Poland , Romania , Slovakia , the Czech Republic , Turkey and Serbia , whose websites are registered under the respective national top-level domain . These partner portals offer localized information in the respective national language, for example on the European policy of the national parties concerned. The Euractiv office in Germany was founded in Berlin in 2009.

Affiliated with Euractiv is a trilingual (English, French, German) blog portal called BlogActiv ( www.blogactiv.eu ). Overall, the core pages euractiv.com, euractiv.de and euractiv.fr have 952,449 readers (January 2018) per month, mostly from European politics and business as well as from other media and multipliers. Non-institutional users make up only a small part of the readership.

Partnerships

In 2015, Euractiv Germany entered into media partnerships with Tagesspiegel , La Tribune and EFE, and in 2016 with Wirtschaftswoche , Milano Finanza and Italia Oggi . In addition, since 2014 there has been a media partnership with another European policy portal, namely with treffpunkteuropa.de , the online magazine of Young European Federalists Germany . As part of the media partnerships, content is exchanged between the online publications and thus made accessible to a larger audience.

Business model

Euractiv's online offer is free and freely available, but it is subject to copyright .

Legally, Euractiv is based on a UK public company , the "EURACTIV Media Network". It is largely financed by corporate sponsors and Euractiv membership . These are, for example, associations, non-governmental organizations or political parties , which are given space for press releases and information campaigns on the website for a financial contribution. A smaller part of the funding comes from conventional online advertising as well as through participation in publicly advertised projects, primarily by the European Commission . There is no direct subsidy from the European Union. Euractiv employs around 40 people for the main website and around 100 more for the partner portals.

Foundation, endowment

The "EURACTIV Fondation d'Utilité Publique" is a registered non-profit organization under Belgian law that operates separately from the "EURACTIV Media Network" in the same premises. The foundation is co-financed by other foundations such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation , the Organization Internationale de la Francophonie and the Robert Bosch Foundation . The initiators describe themselves as “ think-and-do tank ”, they offer analyzes, contacts with media experts, workshops, discussion rounds, the main goal is to promote a healthy media sector.
