Europe Elects is a platform that brings together the results of various European opinion research institutes and makes them available to the European public . In the past, the project was compared to FiveThirtyEight .

history

Europe Elects was founded in 2014 as a Twitter account. The project quickly became known as it was the first platform to collect European election data in one place. Founder Tobias Gerhard Schminke recruited a team in 2017 to run the social media account with him . From there, the activities were expanded to other social media platforms and formalized in a start-up.

profile

The intention of the project is to present in an understandable way the complexity of the European public due to the diversity of national party landscapes and electoral systems. The use of the same colors and names as the political groups in the European Parliament increases the transnational understanding of European politics. In addition, overviews of the individual positions of parties and candidates are provided.

Based on the collected data, Europe Elects publishes a “European Sunday question ” and projects what the European Parliament would look like in an election if it were to be voted today. For the 2019 European elections , Europe Elects had the most accurate projection of the distribution of seats for the European Parliament.

In 2019, the platform launched the Europe Elects Podcast , which is published every two weeks. In each episode, team members cotextualize the survey data from Europe and interview experts on survey data, elections and democracy in Europe. In the past, politicians like Andreas Nick and political scientists like Cas Mudde were guests.

Dissemination and reception

Through the use of various channels such as Twitter , Facebook , YouTube and Instagram , the results of European opinion polls have been distributed unprecedentedly through considerable media reception. Europe Elects also cooperates with the transnational television broadcaster euronews .

According to Politico Europe , Europe Elects is the twelfth most influential medium in this Parliament in terms of the number of followers on Twitter among members of the European Parliament , ahead of national mass media such as the American news channel CNN and the French daily Le Monde .
