The Christian-Liebig-Stiftung eV , named after the killed FOCUS editor Christian Liebig , builds and renovates schools in Africa, especially in Malawi, promotes educational projects there and supports young people in need, especially women.

background

On April 7, 2003, Christian Liebig died in a rocket attack off Baghdad . The editor was one of more than 600 journalists who accompanied the US Army and reported on this war. At the time, Liebig was the only German journalist who paid with his life to fulfill his professional task in Iraq. Friends and relatives founded the association on August 21, 2003 to do good in Africa on his behalf.

aims

In Africa, the construction of houses for needy children is made possible and promoted. Primary schools in particular are being built, renovated or expanded. The association works together with other organizations, most of the projects are carried out independently with local companies.

Projects

The first project was the construction of the Christian Liebig Secondary School in Malawi with the aid organization World Vision Germany . Up to 450 children are taught in the secondary school each year. In addition, since 2003 24 primary schools in Africa have been expanded or newly built and various educational projects have been funded. In addition, the CLS supported a village association in Mozambique, the Millennium Village Mabote, for five years. Another focus is the promotion of vocational training for young adults and the support of girls with the construction of two dormitories, one of which is in memory of the late Focus boss Uli Baur .

Board of Trustees

The board of trustees of the association enriches well-known public figures. Members include Helmut Markwort , Harald Schmidt , Peter M. Gehrig, Martin Weiss and Kurt Faltlhauser .

Award

In 2009, the foundation chairman and then partner of Liebig, Beatrice Countess von Keyserlingk, received the KIND award organization of children's laughter on behalf of the CLS . The laudation was given by FOCUS editor-in-chief Uli Baur. In 2016 von Keyserlingk was honored with the “Merit Medal of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany”.
