Goldener Igel is a media prize awarded by the Association of Reservists of the German Federal Armed Forces. V. (VdRBw) has honored extraordinary work in the media on a topic related to the Bundeswehr or the reservists in Germany since the early 1990s .

history

The Golden Hedgehog has been awarded at irregular intervals since 1993 and is currently endowed with prize money totaling 6,000  euros . The logo of the media award shows a gold-colored hedgehog in abstract line drawing. Even in the Old Testament, the hedgehog stands for peacefulness and defensiveness at the same time . The logo should visualize the motto of the award: "Democracy has to be defensive!"

The award reports and analyzes on the topics of security policy , armed forces and reserve , which in addition to careful research, the quality of the contribution in language, style and comprehensibility are evaluated. The prize is currently awarded in the three categories of print , online and radio . The categories are each endowed with 2,000 euros. Until 2013, the winners also received a material prize from the armed forces of the Bundeswehr. Special and promotional prizes are also awarded on an irregular basis.

We will accept contributions that appeared between a certain date in the previous year and the deadline for submitting entries. For example, when the 2010 Golden Hedgehog was awarded , September 1, 2009 was set as the earliest publication date and July 1, 2010 as the deadline for submission and, at the same time, the latest publication date. Articles that have appeared in the media of the reservist association or the Bundeswehr are excluded.

The jury consists of journalists , soldiers / generals and former award winners.

The Golden Hedgehog is the only German media prize in the field of security policy. Between 1993 and 2018 it was awarded eleven times. The next awarding of the Golden Hedgehog is expected to take place in 2020.
