Martin Kaul
Martin Kaul (* 1981 in Bangkok ) is a German journalist and a member of the board of Reporters Without Borders in Germany.
Career
Kaul studied political and cultural studies in Berlin and Istanbul.
From 2009 he worked as an editor for the Berlin daily taz , initially as an editor for extra-parliamentary politics, since 2017 as a reporter in the chief editor. After ten years at taz, he announced his move to the research network of NDR, WDR and Süddeutscher Zeitung in June 2019 . Before that he wrote as a freelance journalist for Spiegel Online , Financial Times Deutschland and dpa, among others .
In 2011 he published the “secret papers of the atomic lobby” in the taz together with Sebastian Heiser . From the previously unpublished papers of the communications agency Deekeling Arndt Advisors , it was possible to trace how the German Atomic Forum tried to reverse the nuclear phase-out previously decided by the red-green federal government. The research showed, among other things, how the agency commissioned the university professor Joachim Schwalbach to issue a courtesy report worth 135,000 euros. The business was arranged by his wife through the communications agency.
In 2016, together with Sebastian Erb , he published research on the so-called keylogger affair surrounding the former taz editor Sebastian Heiser . He had stolen passwords and data from taz employees for at least a year and fled abroad after his discovery. In early 2016, Erb and Kaul found Heiser in an Asian country where Heiser lived under a new identity.
Further research about dedicated themselves to the abuse allegations against hackers, journalists and Wikileaks -Unterstützer Jacob Appelbaum , the BND affair to the members of the Bundestag Roderich Kiesewetter , or the so-called "Hannibal" complex , a network of some right-wing members with references in OPCs, Bundeswehr and Police.
Kaul's live reports via Twitter and Periscope received attention . In autumn 2015 he reported from Budapest's Keleti train station . On the night of September 5, 2015, Kaul accompanied the first bus which, as a result of an agreement between the governments in Hungary, Austria and Germany, brought refugees from Hungary to the Austrian border and thus temporarily suspended the so-called Dublin Regulation . In July 2017, he reported on the protests around the G20 summit in Hamburg in live streams . He was knocked down by a masked man. In September 2018 in Köthen he documented the seditious speech by Thügida founder David Köckert , who spoke of a "race war against the German people" and called for revenge.
