Roderich Kiesewetter (born September 11, 1963 in Pfullendorf ) is a German politician ( CDU ) and former general staff officer ( Colonel a. D. ) of the Bundeswehr . In the 2009 Bundestag election he was elected as a direct candidate in the German Bundestag in the Aalen - Heidenheim constituency. From 2011 to 2016 he was president of the reservists' association .

Military background

After graduating from high school in 1982 at the Hariolf-Gymnasium in Ellwangen an der Jagst , Kiesewetter completed officer training in the armed forces in the artillery force and studied economics and organizational sciences at the University of the Bundeswehr in Munich and economics at the University of Texas in Austin . He finished his studies in 1986 with a degree in business administration .

At the beginning of 1991 he became head of the battery in Sondershausen / Thuringia and thus took part in " Reconstruction East " as part of the "Army of Unity" for over two years . In 1993 he became an adjutant to the commander in the Military District Command III in Düsseldorf, Major General Götz Gliemeroth . From 1995 to 1997 he received his general staff training at the command academy of the German Armed Forces (FüAkBw) in Hamburg and was deployed in his first general staff assignment in the Federal Ministry of Defense (BMVg), then deployed abroad in the Balkans ( SFOR ). This was followed by assignments as a consultant at the European Council and at the NATO headquarters in Brussels and Mons. From 2002 to 2004 he led the rocket artillery training battalion 52 in Hermeskeil as a lieutenant colonel and commander . He then worked from 2004 to 2006 as a G3 in the 7th Panzer Division in Düsseldorf and as a key adviser in the command staff of the Army (Fü H) in Bonn.

In October 2006 he was promoted to colonel and was the office manager of the Chiefs of Staff General Rainer Schuwirth and then General Karl-Heinz Lather at NATO Headquarters Europe ( SHAPE ) in Mons (Belgium). In April 2009 he was transferred to the Operative Leadership Action Forces Command (KdoOpFüEingrKr) in Ulm . Since the constituent session of the 17th German Bundestag on October 27, 2009, he has been a retired Colonel. D.

Political party

Roderich Kiesewetter joined the Junge Union (JU) in 1979 and the CDU in 1981 . He was local chairman of the JU Ellwangen, deputy district chairman of the JU and deputy state chairman of the Baden-Württemberg student union . He has been the district chairman of the CDU Ostalb since 2015.

From 2009 to 2015 he was a member of the district board of the CDU North Württemberg (from 2011 as deputy district chairman) and from 2011 to 2015 an assessor in the state board of the CDU Baden-Württemberg . In addition, he headed the Bundeswehr working group of the CDU Baden-Württemberg until 2015 and was a member of the CDU's European Policy Committee . From 2014 to 2019 he was chairman of the Federal Committee for Foreign, Security, Development and Human Rights Policy. In January 2018 he was elected by the CDU state executive committee of Baden-Württemberg as chairman of the newly formed state committee for external security and development.

On October 11, 2008, the CDU members in the Aalen - Heidenheim constituency nominated Kiesewetter in the first round of three candidates with 75.5 percent of the votes for their candidate for the direct mandate in the 2009 Bundestag election . With this he won 45.1 percent of the votes and thus the direct mandate of the constituency Aalen - Heidenheim.

As a member of the Bundestag , Kiesewetter has been a full member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs since 2009 and was a member of the Committee on Affairs of the European Union (Europe Committee) from 2009 to 2013 . Furthermore, from 2009 to 2013 he was chairman of his group for disarmament , arms control and non-proliferation, deputy chairman of the subcommittee on disarmament, arms control and non-proliferation and from November 2010 to the end of 2012 he was chairman of his group for civil crisis prevention and networked security .

In addition, since February 2010 he has been Head of the German Delegation of the Parliamentary Assembly of the EU and Mediterranean States and Deputy Head of the German Delegation of the Interparliamentary Conference for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) and the Common Security and Defense Policy (CSDP).

In the elections to the 18th German Bundestag in the constituency 270 Aalen-Heidenheim, Roderich Kiesewetter won the direct mandate with 57.6 percent of the first votes and won 49.3 percent of the second votes. Kiesewetter has been chairman of the CDU / CSU parliamentary group in the Foreign Affairs Committee since January 2014 . From April 10, 2014 to March 1, 2015 he was chairman of his parliamentary group of the 1st committee of inquiry of the 18th electoral term ( NSA committee of inquiry ). He resigned from this office for personal reasons. According to the newspaper Die Welt , Kiesewetter did this to avoid possible doubts about his impartiality in the NSA investigation committee after an attempted influence of an employee of the Federal Intelligence Service became known.

On July 22, 2016, Kiesewetter was nominated as a candidate of the CDU for the constituency of Aalen-Heidenheim for the 19th German Bundestag with 96.04 percent approval. In the 2017 federal election, with 46.4 percent, he again achieved the direct mandate with the seventeenth best first vote result for the CDU in Germany. He is also a full member of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the 19th German Bundestag and chairman of the CDU / CSU parliamentary group, as well as a deputy member of the Defense Committee, the Subcommittee on Disarmament, Arms Control and Non-Proliferation and the Subcommittee on United Nations, International Organizations and Globalization.

As a foreign politician, he is a regular participant in international meetings such as the Munich Security Conference , the Congress Bundestag Forum, which is supported by the German Marshall Fund and the Robert Bosch Foundation , the Königswinter Conference of the German-British Society and the Bergedorf Round Table of the Körber Foundation or the "Global Atlanticists" of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation .

He is also one of the regular participants in the discussion group of members of the Bundestag from the CDU / CSU and Bündnis90 / Die Grünen, the so-called Pizza Connection , which has been coordinated by MPs Jens Spahn and Omid Nouripour since 2013 .

Roderich Kiesewetter has been a member of the Franco-German Parliamentary Assembly since 2019 .

Memberships

Kiesewetter is a member of the German Society for Foreign Policy , the Atlantik-Brücke and the Lions Club .

He is also a member of the Bundeswehr Social Welfare Service and the Clausewitz Society . From November 11, 2011, he was President of the Association of Reservists of the German Armed Forces , in which he had been President Gerd Höfer's deputy since 2010 . He resigned from this office on June 28, 2016 after criticizing the previously unknown high costs of a reception by the reservists' association.

From the end of 2012 to October 2018, Kiesewetter was Deputy Chairman of the 6th and 7th Advisory Board of the Federal Academy for Security Policy and thus one of the two deputies of the former Parliamentary State Secretary. D. Walter Kolbow . Since October 2018 he has been the unanimously elected chairman of the 8th advisory board of the BAKS.

Kiesewetter was a supporter of the " Union of the Middle " until its dissolution in November 2019 .
