Pizza Connection (Politics)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In German politics, a pizza connection is a discussion group between a few young members of the Bundestag from the CDU and Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen in the 1990s and at the beginning of the 2000s.

On June 1, 1995, MPs from both parties met for the first time in the Italian restaurant Sassella in Bonn . Since large parts of the leading representatives of both parties viewed the representatives of the other party very critically, the meetings caused a sensation. They got their name from one of the critics, the then CSU Secretary General Bernd Protzner , who had threatened to keep an eye on the "Pizza Connection" (referring to the Sicilian-US drug ring Pizza Connection ). However , there was never pizza to eat at the meetings.

The meetings became politically viable in a dispute over the visit of the then Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Velayati , which led to Helmut Kohl's only defeat in the Bundestag in November 1995 after some CDU dissenters with the SPD and the Greens voted against an invitation.

Participants in the meeting included the CDU Hermann Gröhe , Armin Laschet , Andreas Krautscheid , Norbert Röttgen , Peter Altmaier , Ronald Pofalla , Andreas Storm , Eckart von Klaeden , and Thomas Rachel , and the Greens Matthias Berninger , Cem Özdemir and Volker Beck , Steffi Lemke , Antje Hermenau , Andrea Fischer , Oswald Metzger , Margareta Wolf , Simone Probst , Christine Scheel , Rezzo Schlauch and Wolfgang Schmitt . The CDU MPs Julia Klöckner and Kristina Schröder and the Greens Katrin Göring-Eckardt and Anja Hajduk , who had belonged to the Bundestag since 1998 and 2002, respectively , are named as later members of the circle .

After the formation of the red-green government in 1998 and the move of the Bundestag to Berlin in 1999, the meetings became less frequent. Shortly after the 2005 general election , Gröhe and Pofalla brought a Jamaica coalition into play; However, it remained a one-off exploratory discussion between the leaders of the Union and the Greens. Speculation about an imminent black-green coalition in North Rhine-Westphalia were raised when just before the state election in 2010 Andreas Krautscheid General Secretary of the CDU regional organization was chosen.

In 2007, the Pizza Connection was briefly revived on the initiative of Hermann Gröhe and Margareta Wolf.

After the explorations between the CDU / CSU and the Greens did not lead to the formation of a joint government after the 2013 federal election, the meetings between politicians from both groups were revived. This round is called “Pizza Connection 2.0” or, to differentiate it, also called “Pasta Connection” and is coordinated by the two MPs Jens Spahn (CDU) and Omid Nouripour (Bündnis90 / Die Grünen).
