Matthias Berninger
Matthias Berninger (born January 31, 1971 in Kassel ) is a former German politician ( Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen ). From 2001 to 2005 he was Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Minister for Consumer Protection, Food and Agriculture and from 2003 to 2007 he was state chairman of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen Hessen . After leaving politics in 2007, he worked as a lobbyist for the American food and confectionery group Mars Incorporated . Since January 1, 2019, he has been Head of Public Relations and Sustainability at Bayer AG .
School and study
After graduating from the Goethe-Gymnasium in Kassel in 1990 , Berninger began studying chemistry and political science at the Kassel University of Applied Sciences , which he completed in 1994 with the first state examination for teaching at grammar schools.
Political career
Since 1990 he has been a member of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen. From 1993 to 1997 he was a member of the municipal council of Ahnatal and from 1993 to 1994 also in the district council of the Kassel district . From 2003 to 2007 Berninger was the spokesman for the Hesse State Green Board .
After the federal election in 1994 , Berninger became the youngest member of the German Bundestag until then at the age of 23 . From 1997 to 2001 he was spokesman for university policy for the Bundestag parliamentary group Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen. Berninger has always entered the German Bundestag via the Hesse state list. However, his candidacies for the direct mandate in the Bundestag constituency of Kassel were unsuccessful.
On January 23, 2001, Berninger was appointed Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Minister for Consumer Protection, Food and Agriculture in the Federal Government led by Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schröder . At the age of 29 he was the youngest ever appointed parliamentary state secretary.
After the 2005 Bundestag election , he resigned on November 22, 2005 from the office of Parliamentary State Secretary. On September 27, 2005, he ran for the post of parliamentary managing director, but was defeated by Volker Beck in the first ballot with 17 to 34 votes. From 2005 to 2007, Berninger was the economic policy spokesman for the Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen parliamentary group. Berninger ended his political career in February 2007 by giving up his mandate. For him moved Nicole Maisch according to the Bundestag.
Berninger was considered a real and a pupil of Joschka Fischer . He was a member of the so-called Pizza Connection , a discussion group between some young members of the CDU and Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen, which was considered to be the pioneer of black-green coalitions . He was in constant contact with the then Junge Union boss Philipp Missfelder and with the FDP politician and later Federal Minister of Health Daniel Bahr . He was also seen as an economically liberal representative of the New Economy .
Private sector
In 2007, Berninger moved to Brussels as a lobbyist for the US food and confectionery group Mars Incorporated as "Director Corporate Health and Nutrition" in order to improve its image in Europe. In August 2008 he was promoted to the Group's “Global Head of Public Policy” and was responsible for “Health, Nutrition and Sustainability” worldwide.
On January 1, 2019, Berninger moved to Bayer AG as head of the newly created “Public Relations and Sustainability” department after the group had taken over the US seed and pesticide manufacturer Monsanto for 59 billion euros. Berninger, as chief lobbyist, has to deal with questions about the plant protection product glyphosate , which is suspected of causing cancer and which the Greens in Germany in particular are trying to counteract. He commented on this in an interview with the news magazine Der Spiegel .
