The Goethe-Gymnasium Kassel is a high school in the Kassel district of Wesertor . Classes take place at two locations: Grades 5–8 are accommodated in the Schützenstrasse branch, while grade 9 and upper grades are taught in the main building on Ysenburgstrasse.
history
The New Realschule zu Cassel , founded on April 13, 1889, is considered the first forerunner of the Goethe Gymnasium . She was formed from the C-classes of the Realschule at Hedwigstrasse 1 and moved into the school building of the Royal Trade and Commerce School at Friedrich-Wilhelmplatz 6, whose remaining students she also took over.
In 1898 the school moved back into the school building at Hedwigstrasse 1. The building had become vacant because the Oberrealschule , which had emerged from the former Realschule , had moved into a newly constructed building at 89 Kölnische Strasse.
After steady growth, the conversion to Oberrealschule II in the making (OR iE) followed in 1906 . The nickname "in the bucket" (for i. E. ), which is popular in Kassel, goes back to this time . In 1909 the school could finally call itself Oberrealschule II .
On October 14, 1913, the school moved into the newly built school building at Ysenburgstrasse 41. During the First World War , no regular Abitur took place.
In 1938 the school was renamed the Hermann Göring School .
Classes began again for the first time on January 14, 1946, with the approval of the American military government . The school was renamed Realgymnasium Wesertor for boys, Kassel .
In 1956 the name was changed to Goetheschule, grammar school for boys . With the introduction of co-education in 1961, the name was changed to Goetheschule Kassel Gymnasium .
The branch at Wimmelstraße 5 was founded in 1969 due to lack of space. It houses the lower and middle grades.
In 1983 the branch moved to Josephstrasse 18. In 1988 the branch returned to Wimmelstrasse and Schützenstrasse.
In February 2003, at the request of the school conference , the Kassel city council decided to rename it to Goethe-Gymnasium Kassel with effect from June 1st.
Focus
English bilingual branch
A bilingual class is offered from the seventh grade onwards. In the introductory phase (formerly grade 11) a lateral entry into the bilingual branch is possible, exceptionally after consultation also in other grades. In the lower secondary level , history , chemistry , music , geography and biology are taught in English to varying degrees.
The upper secondary level begins with the introductory phase in which the subjects history, politics and economics , chemistry and biology have to be taken as bilingual subjects. Here, too, the amount of English varies depending on the subject. Participation in the compulsory elective course geography is voluntary (as of August 2012).
In the qualification phase , at least two bilingual subjects must be taken consistently in order to receive a “Certificate of Achievement” with the Abitur. An Abitur examination in the subjects attended is not compulsory.
In addition to regular classes, the school offers high school students a preparation course to obtain a Cambridge CAE certificate and a business English course. As preparation courses for DELF / DALF exams are offered in addition to the normal French lessons, students can acquire a CertiLingua at the end of their schooling .
Sports
The Goethe-Gymnasium is a partner school for competitive sports and maintains a school sports center. A sports class offered from the fifth grade is aimed at highly talented students. In the upper level, the school offers sports performance courses.
Natural sciences
The school management strives to be able to offer students a comprehensive range of courses in all three natural sciences (biology, physics, chemistry) that is linked to primary school lessons. So far, however, this goal has only been achieved in the chemistry department. Before the regular lessons, which begin in the seventh grade, the students in grades 5 and 6 can take part in two chemistry working groups.
In grades 8 and 9, elective courses are offered in all natural sciences, which are often based on participation in extracurricular competitions, such as B. the Kasseler Solar Cup, prepare.
In qualification phase 3 (formerly 13.1), the school also offers an interdisciplinary energy course that deals with the technical, economic and ecological aspects of energy conversion.
classes
The lessons are based on the curriculum of the Hessian Ministry of Culture . The shortened schooling period of eight years ( G8 ) introduced in the 2005/06 school year was reversed at the beginning of the 2014/15 school year.
Foreign language offer
English is compulsory as the first foreign language from grade 5. From the sixth grade onwards, there is a choice between French , Russian and Latin as a second foreign language. From the eighth grade onwards, Latin can also be taken as a third foreign language as part of an elective course.
Media studies
As the only high school in Kassel, the school offers the opportunity to take a media studies course in the qualification phase (formerly grades 12 and 13). The course deals with media-specific aspects and can be chosen as an alternative to the basic German and art courses.
Working groups
School newspaper
In December 1948 the first school newspaper of the then Wesertor high school appeared with the first edition of the Wesertor-Boten . After being renamed the Goethe School, the newspaper was called Die Pause from 1957 . In 1977 the Pause editorial team was dissolved and in the following year the first edition of the new newspaper called UMLAUF appeared under the title Untitled . Ulrich Eichler was co-founder of UMLAUF and a consultant teacher until 2010. Since October 28, 1996, the school newspaper has also had an online presence at umlauf.de . The UMLAUF has received numerous awards, such as B. the title best school newspaper of 1997/98 awarded by Spiegel .
Rowing club
Today's rowing club of the Goethe-Gymnasium Kassel e. V. continues the tradition of the student rowing club founded at Oberrealschule II in the summer of 1908.
Until 1927, the association had a boat shed on the property of the gardener Schilling. When this had to be cleared, the club found shelter at the Cassel rowing club (RVC) in Mühlengasse.
After Realgymnasium II was closed on May 31, 1935, Oberrealschule II took over its boathouse on Auedamm and the rowing departments of the two schools merged, including boat equipment. This boathouse was hit in a bombing raid in 1942, and the house and all boats were completely destroyed.
After the Second World War, the right of use for the boathouse of the former secondary school I in Giesenallee 11 was transferred to the newly founded Wesertor secondary school. In 1951, the newly established rowing department of the Wesertor secondary school initially placed itself under the care of the Cassel rowing club (RVC), which had lost its boathouse in the war and had resumed its rowing work in the boathouse of the former secondary school I at the end of 1946.
In September 1952, an independent student rowing club was founded and the RVC moved to the newly built youth house on the Fulda bridge at the beginning of 1953.
From 1989 to 1991 the four-man with helmsman (boys) won the national finals of youth trained for the Olympics .
