history

Editorial building in Dresden

The first issue of the Dresdner Morgenpost appeared on June 11, 1990; the first Chemnitzer Morgenpost was available to buy on August 20, 1990.

The paper initially appeared in two colors in the so-called Young World format. The reason for this was the printing technology that was available after the fall of the Wall. In 1997 all editions were switched to the semi-Rhenish newspaper format and four-color printing was introduced .

From 1999 to 2014 Peter Rzepus was editor-in-chief , who was replaced by Robert Kuhne in May 2014.

Corporate structure

The paper is owned by Dresdner Druck- und Verlagshaus GmbH & Co. KG (DD + V media group), which also publishes the Sächsische Zeitung and the Döbelner Anzeiger . The publishing house Gruner + Jahr has a 60 percent stake in the media group , the remaining 40 percent is held by the media holding company of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) , the Deutsche Druck- und Verlagsgesellschaft .

Edition

The Morgenpost has lost a lot of its circulation in recent years . The number of copies sold has fallen by an average of 6.2% per year over the past 10 years. Last year it decreased by 7.3%.

Development of the number of copies sold

Since the beginning of 2011, the Morgenpost titles have also been available as electronic newspapers . Since October 3, 2014 it has had its own news website under the title TAG24 .

Editorial

The local part of the editions in Dresden and Chemnitz in particular should be mentioned as a distinguishing feature from the competition there. Another important editorial component is the extensive sports section, which also takes care of the teams and sports that are strong in the region. After the football weekend, all tables and results from the 1st league to the 2nd city class appear. The Morgenpost also contains a cultural section, which is rarely found in commercial newspapers, with at least one page per day.

Events, road closures, emergency services and other service topics can be found in this newspaper every day. Puzzle lovers can solve a crossword puzzle and sudoku every day. The Sunday edition contains travel pages and longer reports as well as a larger puzzle section.

A children's website ( Mopolino ) was published daily until 2014 , which packaged and conveyed current topics and news in a child-friendly manner. Until the spring of the same year a column appeared once a week, which was written from the point of view of a dog (named Tarzan) and which dealt provocatively with news, antics or political changes in the city.

marketing

Morgenpost sponsors various local teams (e.g. Dresden Monarchs , Dresdner SC , Chemnitzer FC , ETC Crimmitschau and Wild Boys Chemnitz ). She also supports the Dresden Marathon .

Occasionally there are editions with DVD or CD add-ons that readers can buy in addition to the normal edition. Mostly films, documentaries or stage recordings by local artists, well-known Eastern topics or regional origins are offered.

A readers' festival is held once a year in Dresden and Chemnitz.
