Hofschneider research award
The Peter Hans Hofschneider Research Prize for Science and Medical Journalism (in short: Hofschneider Research Prize ) is a German-language journalist prize for science journalism . The award, endowed with 20,000 Swiss francs (more than 18,000 euros), has been announced annually since 2008 by the Zurich Foundation for Experimental Biomedicine in honor of Peter Hans Hofschneider (1929–2004), former director of the Max Planck Institute for Biochemistry .
Structures
The prize money from this science journalist award is intended to be used to carry out an elaborate research project planned and described in detail by the applicant, which would exceed the usual time and budget of an editorial office or which could not or only with difficulty be carried out by freelance journalists. The research grant includes a personal fee as well as travel and material costs.
Applications must be submitted to the Foundation for Experimental Biomedicine by December 15 of each year. In addition to a short curriculum vitae and work samples, meaningful information on the research process of those earlier work as well as a precise time and cost plan for the intended project are expected.
The six-member jury consists of biomedical professors and half of science journalism experts. Medicine represented (2016): Eberhard Hildt ( Paul Ehrlich Institute ), Michael Stürzl ( University Hospital Erlangen ) and Sabine Werner ( ETH Zurich ). Journalism is represented by Julia Stein (Chair of the Research Network ), Volker Stollorz ( FAZ / Ex-Board Member Science Press Conference ) and Holger Wormer ( Technical University of Dortmund ).
Journalistic work and the draft of a future research project on topics from science and research are honored. The contributions submitted should convince through a good presentation of scientific facts as well as through research into political, scientific or social backgrounds. The prize is awarded in close cooperation with the Research Network , which is also represented on the jury, and is ceremoniously presented at their annual meeting.
