Reto U. Schneider

Reto U. Schneider (* 1963 in Solothurn ) is a Swiss science journalist .

After studying electrical engineering at the ETH Zurich and two years as an electrical engineer at Ascom, Schneider graduated from the Ringier School of Journalism . He attended as EICOS -Fellow the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry in Martinsried and as a Knight Science Journalism Fellow, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge .

After several years of professional activity as a freelance journalist and as head of the science department for the news magazine Facts from Tamedia , he joined the editorial team of the NZZ Folio in 1999 and has been its deputy editor-in-chief since 2006. In 2004 he published his columns in the NZZ Folio in the anthology “Das Buch der Verrückten Expere ” (The Book of Crazy Experiments) , which was translated into eight languages ​​and was named “ Science Book of the Year ” ( Image of Science ) in Germany. In 2009 he published «The new book of crazy experiments» .

Other prizes that Schneider has received include the “ Helmut Schmidt Journalist Prize ” (2007 for an article on sales psychology ) and the “Prix Media” of the Swiss Academy of Sciences (2004 for an article about an animal asylum for former experimental monkeys ), the cogito Prize (2010), the Hofschneider Research Prize (2012) and the Georg von Holtzbrinck Prize for Science Journalism (2014). In 2018 Schneider received the Helmut Sontag Prize . He has also been voted “Swiss Science Journalist of the Year” four times.

From 2001 to 2005 he was President of the Swiss Club for Science Journalism.

Reto Schneider lives in Zurich with his wife and son.
