Peter Hans Hofschneider

Peter Hans Hofschneider (born February 14, 1929 in Stuttgart ; † July 23, 2004 in Munich ) was a pioneer of German molecular biology . He made significant contributions to the understanding of bacteriophage biology . His research into the hepatitis B virus was instrumental in developing the hepatitis vaccine.

Hofschneider had worked at the Max Planck Institute for Biochemistry since 1957 , and since 1966 Scientific Member of the Max Planck Society and Director of the Virus Research Department. In 1973 he was significantly involved in the planning and implementation of the re-establishment of the MPI for Biochemistry in Martinsried . He was also involved in publicizing the forgery case involving Friedhelm Herrmann and Marion Brach: Eberhardt Hildt, at the time an employee of Herrmann und Brach, turned to his former doctoral supervisor Hofschneider when the internal dispute about the forgeries escalated.

From 1977 Hofschneider was an elected member of the Leopoldina ; In 1993 he was awarded the Jacob Henle Medal .

Hofschneider also advocated a critical public discussion of possible errors and consequences of scientific research.

The Swiss Foundation for Experimental Biomedicine awards an endowed professorship every two years in honor of Peter Hans Hofschneider and has been awarding the annual Peter Hans Hofschneider Research Prize for science and medical journalism, endowed with 20,000 Swiss francs, since 2008 .

The Art Foundation Baden-Württemberg has also been awarding a prize named after him since 2008, which is awarded to artists every two years.

Since 1950 he was a member of the student union Akademische Gesellschaft Stuttgardia Tübingen .
